Rico Suave’s daughter responds to flubbing Miss USA question

The daughter of 90s pop star Gerardo, Nadia Mejia, was able to poke fun at herself after flubbing on a question about the economy during the televised portion of last night’s Miss USA competition.

The current Miss California caught a bunch of grief on social media for providing the following answer after being asked about economic inequality:

“When it comes to social and economic equality, I think that the rich and the poor need to stop being so segregated. I think there is a middle class. I think that the rich need to … [uncomfortable pause] … I think the rich need to be able to be giving and the poor need to work hard and I think the middle class needs to work hard and find an in-between.”

Mejia took to Instagram and ate up her critics raw like sushi by singing about her lack of ecoknowledge to a Backstreet Boys tune:

Nadia won over a lot of fans when she posted a very personal blog earlier this year about her struggles with anorexia. In the piece via NotSoPrivateParts, she wrote:

Being a full time model, I’m constantly being judged based on my appearance and measurements. Breaking into the entertainment industry so young without my parents being there to keep me grounded and sane was extremely difficult. My mom and dad were going through the process of separating (but their faith in the Lord has kept them together to this day). I dealt with my anger and resentment a bit differently than probably most. I focused all of my energy and heart into my work to distract me from the chaos going on around me. I would focus so much on pleasing my bookers, who body shamed me endlessly, that I went from 132 lbs to 102 lbs in the matter of 2 months. I counted calories endlessly and refused to eat over 1000 cal a day. I ran 4 miles a day and feared food more than anything in the world. Eight months of my life, I struggled with this. But with the support of my family and my faith in God, I was able to overcome what the devil was telling me.

For our readers who aren’t old enough to get the Rico reference, Gerardo landed a massive crossover hit with his song “Rico Suave” in the early 90s.

So, let’s hop in the ol’ internet time machine and visit the Oprah Winfrey Show as her audience loses their collective minds while Gerardo explains, “There’s not a woman that can handle a man like me. That’s why I juggle two or three. I ain’t one to commit, you can omit that bit. You pop the question that’s it!”
