Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock has adopted a daughter, 3 1/3-year-old Laila, a child from Louisiana who had been in foster care.

In a cover story for People, the 51-year-old says, “When I look at Laila, there’s no doubt in my mind that she was supposed to be here. I can tell you absolutely, the exact right children came to me at the exact right time.”

Bullock emphasized that her adopted 5-year-old son Louis helped spearhead their new family journey. The Gravity star added, “I knew she was scared, and all I wanted was for her to know Louis and I weren’t going anywhere.”

Bullock is sharing her story in hopes of highlighting the 415,129 children currently in foster care in the United States. “My family is blended and diverse, nutty, and loving and understanding,” she says. “That’s a family.”
