Lena Dunham (mostly) quits Twitter, will probably end Girls next season

Lena Dunham Twitter and Girls Ending

Do Lena Dunham fans want the bad news or the worst news first? Let’s go with the bad: She has sworn off reading anything on Twitter, so don’t bother responding to her messages. As for the worse news, Dunham said she will likely wrap HBO’s Girls after the sixth season.

Of Twitter, Lena told the Re/Code Decode podcast she’s determined that reading through responses “creates some really kind of cancerous stuff inside you.” She explained, “I tweet, but I do it through someone else….It truly wasn’t a safe space for me….Even if you think, ‘Oh I can read like 10 mentions that say I should be stoned to death.’ That’s verbal abuse.”

By contrast, Lena said she thinks Instagram is a better space with a “more positive community” — even though she had at least one negative experience there when she posted a picture of herself in boyfriend Jack Antonoff’s boxers. She said, “It turned into the most rabid, disgusting debate about women’s bodies and my Instagram page was somehow the hub for misogynists for the afternoon.” She opted to delete that picture.

Speaking to Z100’s Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on Tuesday, Lena also said she will wrap Girls after the sixth season. Probably. “Never say never, but that is the way that we’re thinking about it right now and we’re starting to think about sort of how to wrap up the storylines of these particular young women,” she said of her reasoning. “I started working on this show when I was 23, and now I’m going to be 30 so it kind of feels right that this show kind of sandwiched my 20s and then I go off into the world!”
