OK magazine retracts Katy Perry pregnancy cover story, Katy responds

OK magazine cover Katy Perry pregnant March 2 2015

Pop singer superstar Katy Perry somehow managed to get OK magazine to retract their March 2 cover story titled “KATY’S PREGNANT!” In addition to retracting their pregnancy claims, Not OK also apologized for claiming Katy was planning a wedding with John Mayer and for “including paparazzi photos of Ms. Perry that had been taken with a long lens while she was having a private function at her home.”

Here is the full retraction/apology from OK:

Setting the Record Straight

In the March 2, 2015 print edition of OK! Magazine, we wrongly stated that Katy Perry was pregnant, and that she was planning a wedding. We acknowledge that Ms. Perry is not pregnant, and she is not planning a wedding. We regret the mistake and sincerely apologize to Ms. Perry for publishing the error. We also apologize for including paparazzi photos of Ms. Perry that had been taken with a long lens while she was having a private function at her home.

UPDATE – Katy Perry shared OK’s retraction on Facebook along with this:

A message from Katy: REMEMBER these magazines are fiction designed for entertainment. NO ONE speaks for me.

In the article OK claimed that Katy Perry was two months pregnant and planned on marrying John Mayer in April. A source told them, “They want to spend their lives together, and it looks like that’s exactly what’s going to happen.”

On the OK cover above you can see the photo allegedly featuring Katy Perry’s two-month baby bump. Or, in other words, Katy was wearing something loose-fitting.

False pregnancy stories are pretty common in the world of tabloid journalism (just ask Jennifer Aniston, who has “reportedly” been expecting for about 15 years now), but rarely are they retracted due to the fact that it is hard to prove that being accused of being pregnant is defamatory. But, it seems that Katy Perry’s legal team must have found some viable legal ground (perhaps the paparazzi photo was illegal?) to challenge the story.

OK is the second tabloid to issue a major retraction in as many weeks. On March 19, Us Weekly admitted that their interview with Kendall Jenner in which she talked about her father Bruce Jenner’s transition (among other things) was completely fabricated by a freelance writer.
