Years after tech multi-millionaire John McAfee made his fortune with antivirus software, he settled in Belize for a while. He set up companies, and even a lab to develop new medicines using the local plants. In 2012, though, he fled the country after being named a person of interest in his neighbor Gregory Faul murder.

McAfee said he believed the Belize government was trying to kill him. For a while, no one knew where McAfee was. He wouldn’t tell anyone where he was, hinting to both the press and the police that he was still in Belize. They did speak to one of his girlfriends, who recalled an event where she almost killed him.

He fled to Guatemala with another girlfriend, Samantha, where she said he dyed his hair and used a disguise when he went outside. Soon, his was taken into custody in Guatemala because he was in the country illegally. He says he faked a couple of heart attacks to buy time for his lawyers to file appeals to stop his deportation to Belize. Soon, he was deported to the United States, where he lived for a while in several locations, including a stint in Canada, before settling in Lexington, Tennessee. He still believes the Belize government is out to get him, had killed his dogs, and is trying to hunt him down.

“In Belize, the war that I had with the government over their illegal invasion of my property in the jungle went on for almost a year. It culminated in the mysterious murder of my neighbor for which they wanted to question me, since I was his neighbor his next-door neighbor. I refused to do that, because I had beenin a war of words with them for a year,” McAfee said in a new interview to Dateline.

“When I came back to the States I had a firm and solid conviction that the Belizean government was attempting to remove me as a potential threat to, you know, to their own security, because of information that I possessed. You know, after two years of warring about that, I realized that it’s getting me nowhere,” McAfee said.

He’s now operating a new company called Future Tense, which is developing security apps. “I am utilizing my experience incomputer technology and communications to create products for children, parents and the public in general, that will allow them to take more control over their privacy and security,” McAfee said.

McAfee claimed the government recently searched his house while he and his wife hid, and took his security cameras. “It is exhausting to live in fear,” he says.
