What is the average penis size? The British Urology Journal has published the long-awaited results of its long-term study of penis size. Their goal: Answering the often-asked question “How big is average?” Their study: “‘Am I normal?’ A systematic review and construction of nomograms for flaccid and erect penis length and circumference in up to 15,521 men.” Sure to become a landmark in the field.

So: How big is the average penis? And what is a normal size?

Hold your breath, folks: According to the impressively-endowed study, the average size of an erect (male) penis is 5.16 inches long and 4.59 around. Or roughly half as big as the same man with three drinks in his system will tell you it is.

Furthermore, a penis of 5.9 inches or more puts a man in the 90th percentile, length-wise; the longest penises in the study were all seven inches or more; and “Many men with a [3.54 inch] erection will have no problems having mutually satisfactory sexual relations.”

According to Dr. Gordon Muir, a urological surgeon at King’s Hospital in London and co-author of the study,

We wanted to be able to help men and their doctors with a definitive paper since there are many contradictory reports from small or poor quality studies….Many men live lives of misery and shame, or undergo harmful and unproven interventions, due to a false belief they are abnormal.

Men who self-report penis size tend to either exaggerate their size, measure themselves incorrectly, or both. Gordon and his colleagues wanted to try out a uniform method of measurement, in order to achieve a uniform result.

Muir’s ultimate conclusion? “There is not a ‘right’ penis size for a man of any height, just a range of normal. A bit like shoe size, really!”
