Why did Hilary Duff divorce Mike Comrie? She explains…

Hilary Duff Divorce

After more than a year in limbo, Hilary Duff officially pulled the plug on her marriage to Mike Comrie by filing for divorce on Feb. 20. In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, she opened up about how she came to make the decision.

“Mike and I were very in love when we met. We both really wanted to get married,” Hilary explained of her mindset when she tied the knot in 2010 when she was 22. “I’d been working since the age of 11 or 12, so making that choice at a young age seemed right for me. Maybe it wasn’t, but we spent the majority of our time together really happy.”

But, over the next few years, Hilary said she and Mike simply grew apart.

“It wasn’t working well enough to stay together, but there was still a lot of love involved. It was just a slow set-in of us not being the match that we used to be,” she explained. “I’m lucky for the person he is and I am, and how we decided to handle this.”

They announced their separation in January 2014, but fueled reconciliation rumors throughout the year by attending events together — often without their son, Luca. Hilary also hinted there was a possibility they would make it work..

“I mean, if there wasn’t a chance for getting back [together], I think we would’ve filed for divorce,” she last summer. “We’re just really laid-back, and we’re like, ‘Well, whatever happens, happens.’ Once we’re tired of doing this, we’ll either make this choice or make this choice.”

However, following a “wild night out” by Mike, Hilary submitted divorce papers last month. In them, she cited “irreconcilable differences” and asked for sole physical custody of their 2-year-old son.

“Hilary finally realized Mike wasn’t going to change,” an insider told Us Weekly. “He totally blew it and chose to live life like he was single.”

In the Cosmo interview, which likely happened before the latest turn of events, Hilary said she isn’t sure whether she’ll ever get married again.

“I don’t want to sound bitter because I’m definitely not, but I don’t know if people are meant to be together forever. Things happen over a long relationship that you can’t always fight,” she said. “A marriage of 20 years, the accomplishment of that must feel really great, but there are also huge sacrifices. I just always want to fight for happiness.”
