Sia explains ‘pedophilic’ Elastic Heart video with Shia LaBeouf and 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler

Sia’s latest music video featuring Dance Moms‘ Maddie Ziegler is drumming up a different kind of buzz than their popular collaboration on Chandelier.

“I am flabbergasted Melissa would go to the levels she is going to get her daughter famous,” Dance Moms‘ Cathy Nesbitt-Stein told TMZ, referencing Maddie’s mom. She added she “nearly threw up” while watching the “vile” video for Elastic Heart, which features 12-year-old Maddie and 28-year-old Shia LaBeouf “writhing” around in nude body suits — and Cathy isn’t alone: Many, including some survivors of childhood sexual abuse, are commenting on social media that the video makes them feel uncomfortable.

In an effort to cut off the speculation about her intentions with the video, Sia tweeted yesterday she “anticipated some ‘pedophelia!!!’ cries for this video.” She added, “All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play these two warring ‘sia’ self states.”

Sia’s been vocal about her struggles with bipolar disorder and how she was affected by having a dad with dual personalities.

“It was an energy that came in the room,” she told Howard Stern in 2013 of whenever her dad was in “Stan” mode. In contrast, he was very kind and loving when he was in “Phil” mode. The video for Elastic Heart seems to be about coping with her father without allowing him to bring her down. Still, do you think they took it too far?

I don’t see nothing pedo here…she is telling a story. She will probably use them again in her future vids.

  • Ej

I don’t really see much of a problem with this video. It’s a little weird but I didn’t see anything that would point to pedophilia.

  • Yep

Shia is the perfect mixture of my ex husband and my fiancé. Its kind of creepy but also so sexy lol I don’t find this video a problem. People need to chill out. I highly doubt Shia would ever turn out to be a pedophile.

If anyone is screaming pedophilia over this, they’re clearly that typical person who overreacts about every damn little thing, Much like that Cathy woman does on the show, sounds like she’s still jealous of Maddie.

To me, the video is about someone who is afraid and the struggle in learning to trust, this could apply to almost any kind of relationship.

I dont see any pedophilia in this at all..weird? Sure. All it reads to me is an artsy way of showing a struggling father/daughter or brother/sister relationship.

as a victim of molestation as a child, I don’t see anything wrong with the interaction between them in the video. it did stir up some emotions, but not in a negative way.
I understand the point, even if it wasn’t necessarily about sexual abuse.

I dont see anything wrong but this video is super freaking weird.

    I do NOT see pedophilia.

I found this video to be quite powerful and disturbingly beautiful. I
see two people, a child and an adult that are struggling to find their
roles in their relationship, stripped down to the most vulnerable state. A
child that wants to help her father (parent), while trying not to lose
herself in the process and a father that desperately wants a ‘normal’
relationship with his daughter. He abuses his role as the adult and she ‘escapes’ but goes back to him because she loves him and wants to help…trying to pull him from the cage (mental illness) that he’s in.

As a daughter of two parents with severe mental illness, this video truly spoke to me. I commend Sia, Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler for approaching a taboo subject matter with such class. Something Cathy Nesbitt-Stein obviously does not have.

I’m sorry to those who see pedophilia in this vid. I see a very artistic, beautiful video. Shia and that girl both look beautiful and wow..that girl is a graceful mover! I am usually sensitive to inappropriate things but this is definitely not. Thank you Sia!

reading Sia’s intended message and then watching the video…I think she got her point across beautifully. Raw and emotional. Really well done. I think people who didn’t know the intended message are just jumping to conclusions about why a little girl and grown man would be figuratively warring. But pedophilia implies that there’s something sexual in their interaction, and there isn’t.

Sia never gave an intended message. She only said the two characters were supposed to be her. She didn’t explain any further. Starcasm made up that explanation about the video being about her father based on an interview she gave TWO years ago. Sia hasn’t said what the video is supposed to mean. She probably wants it open to interpretation.

  • BEBE

I loved the video! I think the woman who commented to TMZ was speaking out of jealousy and that’s pretty disgraceful. Let the kid have her time in the spotlight.

i found the video beautiful. period.
