A storyline of Whitney Houston’s upcoming (January 17, 2015) Lifetime biopic involves a romantic relationship with her assistant Robyn Crawford. Did this relationship really happen?

Robyn Crawford and Whitney Houston met when they were teens in East Orange, N.J., and later Crawford dropped out college to work for Whitney. In 1987, when Whitney was 23, she told Time magazine that Robyn was the “sister I never had.” There were rumors for a while back then that Robyn and Whitney were dating, but why can’t two women can’t be best friends and companions without being romantic?

After Whitney died in 2012 Robyn wrote a touching obituary for her friend for Esquire. “I have never spoken about her until now,” she said. “And she knew I wouldn’t. She was a loyal friend, and she knew I was never going to be disloyal to her. I was never going to betray her.”

The same year British political campaigner Peter Tatchell wrote a piece for The Daily Mail claiming that he knew firsthand that the two ladies were “madly in love.”

“When I met them, it was obvious they were madly in love,” he wrote. “Their intimacy and affection was so sweet and romantic. They held hands in the back of the car like teenage sweethearts. Clearly more than just friends, they were a gorgeous couple and so happy together. To see their love was infectious and uplifting.”

“Whitney was happiest and at the peak of her career when she was with Robyn,” he continued. “Sadly, she suffered family and church pressure to end her greatest love of all.”

If Whitney was involved in a lesbian relationship, it’s no great mystery why she would deny it, end it, and cover it up. Her mother Cissy stated clearly that she would not have liked or condoned a gay relationship.

Yolonda Ross, who plays Robyn in the Lifetime flick, doesn’t think it really matters if they were “together” together She told The Daily Beast, “It’s an interesting part of her life. Whether they were together or not, they were people who were so important to each other.”
