VIDEO Tom Hiddleston sings Hank Williams live ahead of biopic

Tom-Hiddleston-sings-Hank-Williams

When it was announced that Tom Hiddeston will be portraying Hank Williams, the most influential artist in country music history, it piqued a lot of interest while raising quite a few eyebrows. Not only was the British Avengers star taking on what could be the role of a lifetime, he was going to be doing his own singing in the biopic I Saw the Light.

By anyone’s account it’s a daring undertaking and had devoted fans of Hank wondering it Tom would possess the acumen to be close to believable – even with assistance of whatever tricks the studio might be able to call upon to help him out.

Hiddleston recently made an appearance at the Wheatland Music Festival in Remus, Michigan and sang a number of the legend’s classics for an eager crowd. One brief video has emerged of Tom singing “Move It On Over” and it provides us all a chance to give a listen to his take on Luke the Drifter:

Hiddleston was joined by Rodney Crowell and Sarah Jarosz.

What do think of Tom’s sangin’? To be honest I’ve got to say it ain’t really close but there’s only been about a million hopefuls since Hank’s reign who’ve tried to emulate that wail and timbre.  Some have come close (his grandson Hank Williams 3 for example) but his is one of those once in forever type voices.

I’m betting Tom will do alright and all in all I’d rather here his vocals ala Joaquin Phoenix in I Walk the Line than an overdub of the originals.

Just because it never hurts to share some Hank – here’s the original straight from the master:
