VIDEO Connecticut man fakes death to get out of engagement

The heartbreak British woman Alex Lanchester felt after her American fiancé, Tucker Blandford, killed himself turned to anger and disgust after she learned he was actually alive and well in Connecticut.

“All I ever did was love him,” Alex told The Mirror two days before her would-be wedding date. “After this I’m not sure I can trust a man ever again.”

Alex now acknowledges “the warning signs were there,” but she said it felt like her and Tucker’s romance was picture-perfect when they met at the University of Connecticut two years ago. After falling in love, they were frustrated by the restrictions on how often Alex could visit the country — so Tucker proposed.

“I said yes straight away,” she said. “I was super happy and smiling like an idiot.”

Once engaged, Alex went back to the U.K., where she eagerly ordered a wedding dress and invitations. Tucker even agreed to come help her with the preparations. But, just a week before his scheduled March trip, Alex received a phone call.

“Alex, this is Tucker’s dad. There’s no easy way to say this… I am sorry to say that Tucker is dead,” the person on the end of the line said, explaining Tucker jumped in front of a car.

A few days later, Alex decided to extend her condolences to Tucker’s mom — who apparently wasn’t in on her son’s scheme and told Alex that Tucker was perfectly fine.

“Then it hit me, that voice on the other end of the phone had sounded eerily familiar,” Alex said, looking back on the first conversation. “I realized it was Tucker pretending to be his dad. My whole world crumbled.”

She hounded her would-be husband with multiple phone calls over the next few days. He eventually texted her back to confirm her suspicions.

Even though she lost a lot in terms of trust and money, Alex said she’s happy she learned the truth before getting legally bound to Tucker.

“I’m really glad I’m not going to be married to some kind of low-life scumbag who would fake his own death and just be really mean about it and generally coward-like in the way he’s going to go about breaking up with me.”

She also went forward with her Aug. 15 trip to America — when she and Tucker planned to marry at the University of Connecticut — as a sort of independence celebration.

“It may be our wedding day but I’m going to spend it making my own awesome memories without him.”
