Now and Then TV show in development, says movie screenwriter Marlene King

Now and Then TV Show Development

Now and Then screenwriter Marlene King said a TV show based on the 1995 coming-of-age film is in development.

“We’re talking about it. We’re talking about Now & Then: The TV Series,” Marlene said during a Reddit AMA on Wednesday.

She explained ABC Family has already expressed interest in the show, which is no surprise considering Marlene hit a home run when developing Pretty Little Liars for the network.

“We’re still talking about that,” Marlene said, adding she believes the interest is still there. “People tweet about this to me all the time, they’ll even send me photos of themselves watching the movie on a sunday afternoon.”

Marlene previously mused about what a Now and Then show would look like and noted a few adjustments to the setting would probably be necessary.

“It’s definitely the same characters, but it won’t be the same time period,” she told MTV News in October 2012. “It will be like if the adults were 40 now and the girls were teenagers. We’ll probably pick it up when the girls are 16, but it will be in the 1980s as opposed to the ’70s because that’s sort of the ‘then’ of our current ‘now.'”

The TV show would also require new actresses — although it would be so awesome to see Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffman and Christina Ricci play the adult versions of their characters. (Ashleigh Aston Moore, who played the young Chrissy, sadly died in 2007 from an alleged drug overdose.)
