With all the storms and cold weather rocking the south this year, schools have had more than their fair share of cold weather related closings. For a pair of teachers and administrators from North Carolina and Kentucky, they took this on as an opportunity to get a little creative – with assists from Vanilla Ice and Queen.
Durham Academy – Durham, North Carolina “Ice Ice Baby”
Michael Ulku-Steiner and Lee Hark, head of school and assistant head of school, decided to pull a little rap game straight from the 80’s for the announcement that their private school with an enrollment of over 1,100 students would be closed today.
Ulku-Steiner told CNN, “We had fun with it. It was very spur of the moment. We’ll try to keep people guessing for sure.”
Boone County Schools – Boone County, Kentucky “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Back on Monday, February 3 Stephens Elementary Principal James Detwiler and drama teacher Chad Caddell sang the closing with help from 70s era Queen.
They wrote via YouTube:
We like to have fun at our school. So, after several school closings due to snow and cold, we recorded this call to parents to see if we could make them laugh. I think we succeeded. Boone County Schools in Kentucky is one of the nation’s finest. And, our awesome parents deserve this chuckle. By the way, if this video can gain us some exposure, AND you know of someone willing to help us out with some cash for technology, we DESPERATELY need it. Ellen? Rosie? Oprah? Jimmy Kimmel? We love our jobs – I hope you can tell!
