Exactly three years after an assassin nearly killed her, former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords is celebrating life by skydiving.

“Today, I grieve, I remember, and I take another step,” Gabby said in a Facebook post. She also shared the top photo. “I’m stronger now… So I have the opportunity to do something I love: skydiving with my friend, former Navy SEAL Jimmy Hatch. Southern Arizona will look beautiful, peaceful from the top of the sky.”

In a New York Times opinion piece published today, Gabby explained her eyesight is still poor, she doesn’t have use of her right leg and only has limited feeling in her right arm. Despite those disabilities, she said her experiences led her to a new path.

“My husband and I pledged to make it our mission to change laws and reduce gun violence in a way that was consistent with our moderate beliefs and our identities as proud gun owners,” she wrote, adding she aims to help Congress “seize on consensus where it exists.”

In Arizona, friends, family and supporters of the six slain in the 2011 attack will gather for bell-ringing, flag-raising ceremonies and church events. Officials in Tucson also announced plans this week to build a memorial to honor the victims.
