VIDEO Powerful New Zealand driving-safety ad goes viral

I guarantee you the grainy VHS videos shown back in the day during my driver’s ed classes were nowhere near as effective as this recent safety video created by New Zealand’s Transportation Agency.

The minute-long spot posted to YouTube on January 5 has already received nearly 1.5 million views, while circulating heavily on popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The PSA dissects an accident by “freezing” the moment directly before impact. A man who pulled out too soon from an intersection exits his vehicle and pleads for not only his life but that of his son’s, who’s seen in the backseat, to an oncoming driver who is speeding.

The tag to the clip reads, “No one should pay for a mistake with their life. When we drive, we share the road with others, so the speed we choose to travel at needs to leave room for any potential error.”

Some intrepid sleuths via Reddit pointed out that a former spot from Thailand took a similar, if not a little less direct, approach.
