I’m a sucker for a good hero pet story and this one about Lucy and owner John Miles made my Friday!
A few days before Thanksgiving John was out in his hometown of Dorchester, Massachusetts walking his 8-year-old, husky-beagle mix Lucy, like he did every day, when both were struck by a motorist. John blacked out and doesn’t recall what happened. Lucy, who suffered injuries from the impact, limped to a nearby dentist office and barked until help was summoned. Lucy then limped back to John’s side until emergency personnel arrived.
John didn’t have any identification on him, so the first responders used Lucy’s tags to discover who he was. Here’s what John had to say about Lucy in an interview with WBZ:
“What I’m being told is she sat there and was crying and everything else, you know because I couldn’t get up. That’s the type of dog she is. I’m very happy that Lucy did what she did. Makes me feel wonderful because if a dog as good as her can get recognition for doing something above and beyond good for her.”
John suffered two broken legs, a broken arm and 15 facial fractures. Lucy is still limping with a torn ACL and leg fractures.
John’s daughter-in-law, Caitlin Miles, communicated just how much Lucy misses John as he recovers from his injuries:
“We found out that beagles actually cry, they have tear ducts. So after the accident, when I was home with her, she had tears running down her fur. She is walking around lost without him.”

Lucy is scheduled for surgery today and there’s a donations page set up via MSPCA for those who want to assist in the cost, which is estimated to be upwards of $5,000.
Boston police stated that the driver stopped after the accident and will face no charges.
John added, “Once the winter’s over, if I’m recovered and Lucy’s recovered you can bet we’ll be out doing our walking again.”
