Oxygen’s new reality show Preachers of L.A. set network records with a Premiere that brought in more than one million viewers on Wednesday, October 9. The controversial show features six mega-church ministers from Southern California who don’t view being called to preach as being diametrically opposed to wanting and owning opulent material possessions — and lots of them. One of the show’s cast members has found himself in an entirely different cauldron of holy hot water however as an alleged former girlfriend of singer/preacher Deitrick Haddon has shared numerous text messages, emails, and photos from Haddon, some of which are quite graphic with his, er, religious staff exposed.
Those photos and communications come courtesy of someone claiming to be Simone Lewis, a former girlfriend of Deitrick’s, and are all from 2008. Simone sent the samples to blogger Funky Dineva, who later shared the story and posted the “tea” online. The first thing Dineva saw was an anonymous scrotograph and a shirtless selfie and then he had this text message conversation with Simone:
Simone: Deitrick Haddon from Preachers of LA TEA!!
Dineva: Ewwwwww b!tch
Dineva: Dineva: Uhmm who’s this
Simone: Simone the woman he cheated on his first wife with
Dineva: How did u get my number, and I’m more interested in your story then the pictures
Simone: A friend of mine Corey had it. I got Skype video chats, voicemails, text, and emails
Dineva: Send [illegible] [Funky Dineva's email address]
Dineva: I am at dinner but let’s chat tonight
Simone: We can meet tomorrow and I can hand off allllll the info on USB. I’m gonna fwd you some screenshots for now
Funky Dineva published some of the messages and photos (including the nude pics, which he posted on his Tumblr account – just scroll to the bottom of his article for the link) and scandal ensued.
Here are a couple sample Deitrick Haddon selfies followed by a sample email exchange allegedly between him and Simone:
Last night I was at my sisters house, used her webcam…you didnt answer my text. Called you….No answer…So dont be sending me messages telling me to wake my ass up when you cant reply to me.
My phone was tripping last night girl and I was in my walking around and didn’t realize you were trying to catch me. The last text I got was Guess What I said What’s up!! Simone if i don’t respond trust me there is a good reason. It ain’t like i don’t want to talk to my women crazy! I’m the one that’s been begging you to get a webcam right?
Anyway hmmmmmmmmm baby you look so good. I can’t wait to see you! I’m at the airport right now. My flight leaves at 9:45. I have about 2hrs before my flight leave.
I miss you,
If you weren’t aware, Deitrick Haddon is divorced, and he addressed some of the negative responses to that fact from the Christian community in an interview with The Christian Post in which he defends being just a man like everyone else — which I suppose could be extended to sending photos of his penis to girlfriends as well:
The truth of the matter is, everyone that will read this post has had their journey, and the journey has not been perfect, if they tell the truth about it. The reality of it is, I’m not the first person that has gone through a divorce and I’m certainly not the last. Things happen. So you have to move on beyond your failures, your mistakes. And I definitely look at it as a failure, because when I set out to be married it was for the long haul. When people get married they want it to work forever and live happily ever after, but life happens and things happen and beyond anybody’s part it happens and sometimes you move on.
So that right there has not been a barrier at all. As a matter of fact, it made me in a lot of circles human. It made me reachable. It made me connect with so many people. Millions in church and out of church that have gone through it and they appreciate that I can continue on, holding on to God after that. Even after being divorced and then having a baby out of wedlock would seem like failure on top of failure. My message to everybody is, your mistake doesn’t disqualify you when it comes to God. It makes you better and it qualifies you if you do the right things, if you repent. See, I can’t sing and preach to people about repentance and when I fall short, I can’t show them how to repent, how to move forward, how to get things right with God. So it has humanized me, and I have embraced it. Because before in people’s mind, we as preachers are perfect. We’re certainly held to a higher standard. But what happens when you fall short of that standard? Are you supposed to go somewhere, sit down and die? Or live on, move on, press on? Let that be your testimony. Let your mess be your message. Grow from it as a man and as a woman, and keep preaching the Gospel. That’s where I am with that.
Thus far…as a matter of fact, it has all been a set-up, because honestly I feel like a lot of things in my life have been out of my control. … Everything on my journey has been on purpose to make me the man that I am today. It has opened up so many opportunities for me to share my message on a whole nother level that I had not been able to share the message of Jesus Christ on as a result of my mistakes. So I give God Glory, I’m humbled, and I give God glory for another chance, another opportunity to be an example to millions.
So far, Deitrick has remained quiet on the nude photos scandal as we all patiently await the next installment from Funky Dineva courtesy of the infamous USB drive. Preachers of L.A. airs Wednesday nights at 10/9c. You can find out more about the entire cast, and their rather extravagant lifestyles, here!
