Teen Mom 3 Katie Yeager's ex fiance Joey Maes mug shot photo

On last week’s episode of Teen Mom 3 we saw an explosive scene between Katie Yeager and fiance Joey Maes in which Joey lost his temper and went completely ballistic, yelling and furiously knocking stuff down before storming out of the couple’s apartment. As frightening as the scene was, it apparently wasn’t the worst heated incident between the two as reports surfaced today that Joey physically assaulted Katie a number of times when MTV cameras were not present.

According to Radar Online, a police report was filed in June of 2012 after an argument between Katie and Joey (real name Joseph Maes) escalated to the point that Katie’s mother called police. The alleged squabble occurred just after Katie reportedly caught Joey cheating. According to Radar’s source, Joey “was punching and throwing things around the house while Katie was moving out,” and then “it got physical.” Katie decided not to press charges because “she didn’t want [their daughter] Molli to be in the middle of that,” according to the source.

In October Katie reportedly moved back in with Joey. Although he agreed to get anger management therapy, he never followed through with it and the fighting continued. According to Radar Online there was even one fight in October in which Joey broke Katie’s nose!

“She left after that and she’s never really put herself in the situation where she has been alone with him [again],” the source revealed. “When they exchange Molli, they meet in public places and stuff like that.”

Katie’s precautions seem to be backed up by Radar’s source who says another of Joey’s girlfriends claims he beat her up earlier this summer!

The source says Katie, unlike Joey, “always remained calm” and “never caused bodily harm to him or laid her hands on him or anything like that.” That doesn’t mean Katie was completely innocent, of course, because words can be abusive too. “She’s said her share of hurtful things,” the source adds.

The drama between Katie and Joey continues in tonight’s episode, as evidenced by this preview clip in which Katie talks to Joey about their tumultuous relationship and his recent outburst:

Katie: “Why do you get so uncontrollably angry?”

Joey: Because the things that you say.

Katie: I know. But, like, Molli can hear you yelling and that scares her. That’s why we both need to fix this, so it’s not a problem in the future. We should be able to handle our problems like adults.

Joey: I agree. You know, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to freak out. I was just p!ssed.

Katie: I know. That’s why we both need to find better ways to express our feelings to each other.

I think it’s important to note that although Katie and Joey had a rather acrimonious split, they have been mature about keeping things in perspective and prioritizing the well being of their daughter Molli and now appear to have a healthy co-parenting relationship. I think perhaps Katie said it best when she tweeted about Joey this past July: “You are a great dad just a horrible boyfriend.”

Here’s another tweet from Katie back in February in which she answers a fan’s question about what happened to her relationship with Joey:

And when a fan asked in May “would you ever consider getting back with Joey?” Katie tweeted back, “Never we aren’t good together…..”

And it seems a bad temper isn’t Joey’s only issue. Katie revealed back in April of 2012 that “Joey is a recovered drug addict 2 years clean from Meth.” She then added, “It’s a hard thing to watch.”

Though the timeline doesn’t match up as far as Joey being “2 years clean” in April, 2012, this helps explain Joey Maes’ mug shot photo at the top of this post stemming from a February, 2011 arrest for possession of a “controlled dangerous substance,” which in Wyoming could be anything from meth to pot to heroin. According to CriminalDefenseLawyer.com, “Wyoming classifies not only well-known drugs like marijuana, heroin, and cocaine as CDS, but also the compounds used to manufacture them.”

I really, really like Katie. She seems to actually have her daughters best interest at heart, and respects that Joey is the father of her child (even if he doesn’t always deserve it). She starting to become my favourite, through all of the teen mom incarnations.

Katie is also my favorite. Alex used to be until recently. Alex talks about her daughter and keeping her from the father as if the little girl is a piece of property. I understand Matt had a drug problem in the early stages of his daughter’s life but he is obviously clean now and has been for a year and when he says he wants to go to court to get his rights imposed, Alex constantly says “I will take nothing less than supervised visits with a social worker at the courthouse.” Um, what do you mean “you will take nothing less?” YOU aren’t the one who gets to decide when/where/how Matt sees that little girl, the state is! Ugh, she is just so immature. It really has nothing to do with him, she is insanely jealous that he has a new girlfriend, that’s all it is. If he broke up with the gf today and asked her tomorrow if they could get back together and if he could move in with her and be with his daughter, she wouldn’t even take a second to think about it before she said “yes.” She really needs to grow up. Also messed up how she blasted to the world that his father molested him as a toddler. That’s so messed up, you don’t go there!

I agree. I like Alex, but I think her continued prodding of Matt in public is uncalled for. She should stop talking about him all together,

    • seriously?

I agree that Alex is a ratchet little girl, but to say that her anger stems only from jealousy is ridiculous. As if the only possible reason a mother could feel disdain toward her child’s father is because of a new woman. Couldn’t possibly be that he had a raging heroin addiction. Clean or not, she is justified in not trusting that man child. Her words on Twitter were inexcusable but her actions as a mother are not. Grow up.

      • http://www.avoiceforalex.blogspot.com/ Joanie

Um, have you followed her ask or twitter? Every single time someone brings up Matt seeing his daughter, her first response ALWAYS involves something about his girlfriend (who does not intend to be there for visitation). So, that’s what I’m basing my opinion off of. No need to tell me to grow up because we disagree or have differing experiences of the situation… sounds like maybe you need to?

        • seriously?

No, I do not need to grow up. I was just pointing out that you saying her ONLY reason for disliking him being because of a woman was pretty presumptuous. If anyone has seen her 16 and Pregnant episode they could see that her resentment goes much deeper than simply not liking the other woman.

    • Cheermom_1975

Her nagging & b!tch!ng drives me crazy. I liked her during 16&P, but now I can’t stand her.

    • Courtney

Sometimes Alex looks like a 35 year old! There was one scene in the kitchen at night and I could only see a 30+ year old woman not a teen mom! Did anyone else see hat too?

    • spottedgiraffe

I didn’t know she revealed he was molested. That’s incredibly messed up. It’s also messed up she’s always saying “good think Arabella looks nothing like you or she would be so ugly” ummm she does look like Matt Alex.

  • Mkmb782

She didn’t press charges because she didn’t want her daughter to be in the middle of that, but it’s okay for her to be in the middle of her dad breaking her mom’s nose? Way to teach him a lesson and set a good example for your daughter Katie!

    • Renee L

Exactly! I thought the same thing when I read that. They want to come off as so mature and sound like the better paent saying they won’t put kids in the middle. But if getting the law involved calls for anything more than getting off the couch, it’s just too much work and they use the kid reason. Nobody said you have to put your kid in the middle. She’s filing a report that is between HIM and HER. Yet, they have no issues with the screaming and fighting in front of the baby.

    • burkey

Well maybe she didn’t initially press charges because she had moved out and didn’t think it would happen again. Then once they got back together and the violence continued they did break up all together. He’s the one who physically assaults her but people have to find a way to criticize the victim of his violence for not handling it the way they think she should’ve..

  • Sweet Venom

I knew it! During the last episode when he said “Wipe that smirk off your face” I felt really afraid for her and then MTV edited the clip so no one had any idea what happened. I didn’t think he committed domestic violence but just the way he said the above line made me think he was capable to an extent.

    • Kara

      I thought that too!

    • burkey

I thought the same exact thing when i saw that. Plus it hasn’t aired yet but in the trailer there’s an episode where Joey is holding the baby screaming at Katie while the baby hysterically cries and Katie tries to get Joey to hand the baby to her. It’s hard to watch in just the few seconds you see it, so I imagine the episode itself will be worse..

      • Sweet Venom

I haven’t seen that scene yet but it sounds scary.

    • MarvelousBeauty

I knew it too! He looked so evil at that moment I knew for sure he was a woman beater. Poor Katie she is most definitely my favorite this time around…Well maybe all.

  • Mia003

These teen moms and dads are really messed up.

  • familylawyer

these girls need to take some domestic violence courses. a child’s exposure to family violence is incredibly harmful and just because a parent doesn’t actively do anything to their child doesn’t mean they are a good parent. the child is a victim just as much as a parent with a broken nose, limited finance, ongoing exposure to emotional abuse or any other manifestation of domestic violence.

  • LaLa84

He looks like Adam, Chelsea Houska’s ex, in the picture where he’s wearing the red hat.

    • Sam

Acts a lot like him too!

      • spottedgiraffe

lol be fair adam never beat anyone

    • kiki

looks like Adam until Adam aged about 20 years!

  • Renee L

Is the eyebrows up, crinkle forehead while looking up a little taking over duck lip as the new go-to picture face? I see girls doing it all the time.

i really liked joey on the show…i thought he had a temper but figured it was just that. i thought maybe he was all pissed over not being able to smoke or something, not a full blown physical abuser. i really love katie too but they kind of made her seem a bit crazy and complaining over nothing?or at least things that he could have gotten away with. mtv should really document things more accurately..

If he has anger issues, as a mother, I would NOT leave my child alone with him!!! I would take him to court and make them order he only get supervised visitation…..

  • dianna

thank you starcasm for telling us the truth about whats really going on about these girls. now i understand why katie is the way she is. i thought she was a bitch and was just giving joey a hard time about alot of things. but i now know thats not the case. i guess that proves that i shouldnt make judgments about these moms from just watching the show. i use to read these articles and it would go along with what was happening on the show but not anymore.

sorry katie for judging without knowing the whole story. and props for keeping it civil for your baby girl. wish you the best. i know how it is to be with an abusive boyfriend and getting out of an abusive relationship is never easy .

  • Takini Bell

Haha I went to boot camp with Joey. Isn’t that insane never knew the dude would be a reality TVstar.
