Before sex tapes, reality television, and QuickTrim Kim Kardashian was just a largely unknown, rich girl who eloped with a talented music producer in 2000 when she was only 19. Damon Thomas, who started Underdog Entertainment with partner Harvey Mason, Jr., was married to Kim until 2004. Their relationship wasn’t highly publicized. Kim’s father, Robert Kardashian, died toward the end of her marriage, in September 2003, and he left his company, Movie Tunes, to Kim and her siblings. Kim learned how to run a business, and when her marriage dissolved she used her connections, business savvy, and publicity from a sex tape to rocket herself to celebrity status.

In a 2007 interview with gossip site Bossip, Kim gave spilled some insight about that time in her life:

I got married because, I clearly was young and it wasn’t the best choice. I definitely learned a lot from it and I don’t have regrets ever. While my friends were at college acting stupid I was at home learning how to be a wife and running my dad’s business, but you know there were problems from the start, I think that I thought things would go away if you got married. It was an insecurity thing that I have definitely learned from. I taught all my friends and my little sisters how to not let…I’m not that person anymore. So if I could go through it so the people close to me would know what not to do then it was worth it all, because I’ve learned so much from it.

Her ex-husband’s company Underdog Entertainment has produced and written songs for almost all the top pop artists of the past decade including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Pink, Jennifer Hudson, and even Aretha Franklin. Mason and Thomas also played a big part in the production of the Dreamgirls soundtrack.
