Lindsay Lohan simultaneously dissed and complimented by director of The Canyons

Lindsay Lohan The Canyons Movie

Lindsay Lohan is in the midst of her court-ordered rehab stay, but her mind is already on to the next thing.

“Lindsay says she is required to be in Venice, Italy, at the beginning of August to attend the premiere of The Canyons,” a source told Radar Online.

According to the movie’s director, Paul Schrader, that’s more dedication than Lindsay displayed during the actual filming.

“Tardiness, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama,” Schrader told Film Comment of his experience with the 27-year-old actress.

In spite of the criticism, Schrader defended Lindsay in the same interview.

“I think Lohan has more natural talent than Monroe did, but like Monroe, her weakness is her inability to fake it,” he said of Lindsay’s method acting style. “This leads to all sorts of emotional turmoil, not to mention on-set delays and melodrama.”

The director added that, in spite of it all, he would always choose to work with actresses like Lindsay who have true charisma.

Schrader also drew a comparison between Lindsay and Marilyn’s public personas.

“Monroe and Lohan exist in the space between actors and celebrities,” he commented. “People whose professional and personal performances are more or less indistinguishable… We call them ‘troubled,’ ‘tormented,’ ‘train wrecks,’ but we can’t turn away. We can’t stop watching. They get under our skin in a way that controlled performers can’t.”

Interestingly, Lindsay once told The New Yorker that Marilyn’s life is a “prime example of what this industry can do to someone.” Yet, Lindsay still reveres Marilyn enough to get one of her quotes tattooed on her arm: “Everyone’s a star and deserves the right to twinkle.”

She just needs to be careful not to “twinkle” too bright and burn out early.
