Prince William and Princess Kate are parents! The Royal Highnesss Prince of Cambridge was born at 4:24 p.m. local time on July 22 at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. He weighs 8-pounds, 6-ounces and is third in line for the throne.
“The Royal Highness and her child are both doing well,” announced a sign at the gates of Buckingham Palace.
The yet unnamed baby boy is the first child for William and Kate, who opted not to learn the baby’s sex until his birth. As the future heir of the British throne, much of the world has been eagerly waiting this news ever since the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy was announced in December.
Anticipation of the royal birth ramped up even more over the past week, as the Duchess of Cambridge was reportedly overdue. The palace indulged royal watchers on Monday morning by announcing that Kate had finally gone into labor: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted this morning to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London in the early stages of labor. The Duchess traveled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.”
Now that the baby has arrived, he is off to a historic start: He is the first ever Prince of Cambridge.
“When we did a lot of research after it was first announced that the couple were to get the title, nothing like that was found. There were some dukes of Cambridge but not a prince or princess,” former Campbridge mayor Sheila Stewart told the Daily Mail.
Buckingham Palace announced the newest addition to the royal family with an official certificate at the gates. That is the same fashion as when Prince William was born in 1982. Prince Charles and Lady Diana made their first appearance with baby William a short time later.
The baby’s name will likely be revealed when the family leaves the hospital, as was the case with William and Harry.
