According to the New York Times, 13 people have died, and 31 are injured in the massive shootings that took place around 1:30 p.m. in Fort Hood Texas. The main shooter, an army psychicatrist named Nidal Malik Hasan was originally reported to be dead, but he’s alive and in stable condition after being shot 4 times.

Major Hasan is a U.S. native of Jordian descent who recently was deployed to Afghanistan. His cousin told Fox News that Hasan was deeply upset about the possibility of being deployed because of the stories his patients told him on a daily basis. He was also experiencing bullying from colleagues over his Muslim faith. He used two handguns to fire into a heavily crowded area and only stopped after Police Officer Kimberly Munley fired back at him.

Fort Hood was locked down when the shootings started in the sports dome, also known at the “soldier readiness area,” where victims were standing in line to receive deployment assignments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Fort Hood is the largest base for the United States, with 25,000 to 30,000 people on the base at any given time.
