‘Dumb & Dumber To’ to hit theaters with original stars 20 years after the original

Dumb and Dumber 2

It took 19 years and dozens of setbacks, but Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will officially revive their classic roles of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne in Dumb & Dumber To.

“We’re middle-aged and still that stupid,” Daniels said of the upcoming film in an interview with CBS. “Our IQ has not gone up one point combined. So it’s a frightening thing. You’re gonna see the two of us standing there trying to put thoughts together and you want to put underneath, ‘Kids don’t do this at home.’ It’s that stupid.”

In other words…

Helmed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, who directed the 1994 original, the new movie will revolve around another adventure. This time, Harry and Lloyd will reportedly search for a long-lost child so one of them can get a new kidney. Daniels, who currently stars in HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Newsroom, describes the Dumb & Dumber To script as “painfully funny.”

Peter Farrrelly also teased fans with some plot details during a Nerdist podcast: “We start in Rhode Island and we pick up today and explain what they’ve been doing the last 18 years. And there is something that happens and we get off to the races quickly.”

That’s all great news for fans of the original comedy. But, if they script is so great, why did the sequel take so long?

“Jim has been against all sequels, and you know, understandably so… But he turned 50 and that will mellow you out, and suddenly he’s going, ‘Let’s have some fun,'” Daniels said.

Even though Daniels and Carrey have down been ready to dumb it down for a couple of years, it’s taken that long for studios to come around.

“The easiest thing to say in Hollywood is ‘no…’ And we had a lot of ‘no’ for two years and finally ‘yes,’ it’s comin’ around,” Daniels said of the film’s support from Universal Studios. “I think it’s got a chance to be — I hope — better than the first one.”

Although Dumb & Dumber To is good news for fans of the original, there are some skeptics of the movie’s ability to repeat the magic. Marred by a short-lived cartoon show in the 1990s and 2003’s critically panned prequel, the Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne names have taken a beating.

We’ll just have to wait a little bit longer to see if Daniels and Carrey can still make us laugh: Dumb & Dumber To is expected to premiere Summer 2014.
