JWoww Mama June and Snooki at the GLAAD Awards
“Honey boo boo bitches!!! #obsessed #loveher” – JWoww

Despite Here Comes Honey Boo Boo‘s reputation among detractors and those who have never actually taken the time to watch it, it’s actually a very positive show. Sure, the girls like to play in the mud, holler and say “fart” a lot, and the family’s dietary habits are just deplorable, but once you look past the lack of etiquette (and money) and the overabundance of cheese puffs, what you have is a loving family that celebrates individuality seemingly completely devoid of discrimination. (You can read more of our thoughts about this here.) That aspect of the show was recognized by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation with a nomination for Outstanding Reality Program at the 2013 GLAAD Media Awards, and Mama June herself flew to New York City to receive the redneckognition in person!

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo first caught the eye of the LGBT community when Alana’s (aka Honey Boo Boo) Uncle Poodle (real name Lee Thompson) was introduced and it was revealed that he is a gay man. Alana seemed completely comfortable with her uncle’s homosexuality and even famously said in an episode, “Ain’t nothin’ wrong with bein’ a little gay. Everybody’s a little gay.” Uncle Poodle is a gay rights activist in Alabama and later revealed he is HIV positive.

And not only is Alana accepting of gay people, she’s downright defensive! Well, gay pigs anyway:

Here are the other GLAAD Media Awards nominees in HCHBB‘s category:

The Amazing Race (CBS)
“It Is What It Is,” Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (TLC)
The Real L Word (Showtime)
Small Town Security (AMC)
“Welcome to Hollywood,” Pregnant in Heels (Bravo)

Here are the four different criteria by which each nominee is measured:

Fair, Accurate and Inclusive Representations – Rather than portraying the LGBT community in broad stereotypes, the project deals with the characters or themes in a fair, accurate, and multi-dimensional manner. (This is different than a “positive role model.”) Inclusive means that the diversity of the LGBT community is represented. This includes economic, geographic, and political diversity, as well as people of color, seniors, differently abled people, etc.

Boldness and Originality – The project breaks new ground by exploring LGBT subject matter in non-traditional ways and handles the LGBT content in a fresh and original manner. Is this project cutting-edge?

Impact – The project impacts society in a significant way. Does this project dramatically increase the cultural dialogue about LGBT issues? Or, does this project reach an audience that is not regularly exposed to LGBT images and issues?

Overall Quality – A project of extremely high quality adds impact and significance to the images and issues portrayed. Fair, accurate and inclusive images can sometimes be weakened when they are part of a poor-quality project.

We will update as soon as we hear who won! (They BETTER redneckognize!)

UPDATE – It seems the GLAAD Media Awards are like the Emmys in that The Amazing Race always wins 🙁

That women is a pig, and it’s not because of how she looks. It’s because she does nothing to fix her obesity. She is ruining her health, her kids health and in my eyes she is nasty as a smoker. I don’t deny that she pass good family values and show her kids respect & self-esteem, And overall she is a really good person, and i do believe beauty is sizeless but morbid obesity is a SERIOUS health concern. I wish mama june’s would make better choice concerning the type of food she buys and how much exercise she makes, because if she goes further in that path she’ll be dead before she’s 65.

    • Gather

She actually lost 50+ pounds and is eating healthier, along with the kids.

      • Allison

        @Gather – she lost over 100 lbs.

@:)))))))) – It’s woman, not women. Learn some grammar.

        • :))))))))

Sorry for the grammar, english is my second laguage. Thanks for pointing it out !

Haters gonna Hate! Who in this world cares what you think. Look in the mirror at yourself before you call someone a pig!

      • :))))))))

Well you cared enough to comment and like i said if she does something for it i take back what i said. I just find it disgusting when someone have a life threatenig health issue and does nothing about it. It’s nasty as much as a smoker is nasty.

People are so quick to discriminate against the obese without realizing what a hard process it is. In the season, she tried to encourage the family to go on a diet and attempt to lose weight, however it seemed apparent that the lack of education about proper nutrition and the extremely low income her family faces led her to inevitable failure. I think this is a reflection not on her, but on our culture. Instead of condemning her or any obese people, we need to try to implement culture change and support. It’s not like she is encouraging child pornography, she is doing something that everyone needs to, eat to stay alive. A drug addict can go cold turkey, you still need food to live. And there are temptations and pressures around every corner. Also, you never know specific people’s health problems that brought them to obesity. After reaching 245 lbs for no apparent reason, I maintained a healthy diet and exercise routine. And I was trying hard as my wedding was fast approaching. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with autoimmune problems and eliminated dairy and gluten. After 2 months I weigh 215. All my previous doctors just recommended psych meds or to just exercise more, but I needed to be following something different that eat less and exercise more. I believe it horrible to attack people for being obese, they should be loved and respected and allowed to feel beautiful, you have no idea what brought them to that weight. I had a patient who ate to be fat because she was molested and didn’t want me to look at her. Bottom line, you criticizing her weight only hurts her and others, her weight is something that should be discussed between her doctor and her family.

Thank you for explaining your point in a adult way more then i did. After making further reaserch and learning that she actually makes exercises, and doesn’t feed of her kid with fast food like most of the people told me, i changed my idea. However i cannot delete the post since it will remain as a post made by guest and i prefer to won up to my mistakes then leave a coward Guest or edit it and other people comment don’t make sense. Plus i should have explained my point without using derogatory words. My point is when you are really overweight, ( at the point it’s totally life threatening, like 400) and you doesn’t do exercices, you doesn’t seek medical cousil, plus you’re showing that behavior to your kids ( like i taugh she was ), in my eyes it’s idiotic and someone should really talk some sens into you ( just like someone who have cirosis and drinks all the time ). And now i kow that my point doesn’t applic to her since she try to makes things different. But i my (poor) defense it was my I’m pregnant and i puked all day, don’t come after me moment.
