AUDIO Sad guy with impounded dog threatens to sue photographer who helped him

Dave-Thomas-Buzz-Lightyear

When animal lover and photographer Maria Sanchez posted the above photo of Dave Thomas weeping next to his impounded pup Buzz Lightyear the internets lit up in a collective need to help the guy out. Thanks to Maria’s diligence, Buzz and Dave were reunited. So what is Dave doing to show his gratitude? Dude is threatening to sue Sanchez, affirming the adage, “no good deed goes unpunished.”

Sanchez has a Facebook page in which she takes the time to post animal pics from the San Bernardido City Animal Shelter in hopes of finding homes and raising awareness. Last week she snapped Thomas giving ol’ Buzz some water when he sat down next to his best friend and started weeping.

Dave had been jailed briefly for failing to appear for traffic violations and in the process his 2-year-old pit bull mix was taken to the pound. When he tried to retrieve Buzz he was unable to do so because of a $400 fee required to get the dog out. Maria followed up by posting the pic and even circulated flyers looking to ID Thomas and to raise the money needed. The money and then some was donated, Thomas was found and he and Buzz were reunited in a beautiful story with a happy ending… Until Maria got this message:

Thomas contacted Sanchez and left the above voicemail threatening to sue over the additional money that Maria got from donations, claiming it all should be his. He said, “You are dead wrong and I will be getting in touch with the lawyer and if you do anything with my money that is slander one, embezzlement two…what’s the other one? Oh grand larceny because it’s over $1,000.” He added that he “was clean” and that’s why the cops let him go.

For her part, Sanchez has promised not to give Thomas “one single penny” and to return all additional money, after the fee and medical costs, back to people who donated it. She wrote on her page:

I just got a phone call from KTLA channel 5. Apparently, Dave has called to inform them that I am keeping the money raised for his dog. I have transferred $842.07 into my bank to reimburse myself for the shelter fees, vet and PetSmart shopping spree that I put onto my personal credit card. I had a discussion regarding the remainder of the donations and how he would like to spend them. I said it would be a good idea to pay off any outstanding tickets so that he will not be taken to jail in the future for having a warrant for unpaid traffic tickets. I asked if he had any bills that were due at the time. I told him that every dime that was donated would go to him and Buzz, but that I would not be giving him the cash. I explained to him that the money that was donated was a blessing for him, I wanted to be sure that we respected that and used the donations responsibly. He sat next to me and nodded his head, Not one response, question or concern.

After I hung up with KTLA channel 5, I tried to call Dave. His wife would not let me speak to him. She screamed at me that I was stealing their dog’s money. She said they have called the news stations and that if I did not give them their money, they were going to call the police.

I am exhausted from this entire experience. This is the last thing I needed or expected. I will not be giving Dave or his wife one single penny, what I will do is refund the money that was donated to Dave. I have had my life and the lives of my children devastated by drug addiction. I will play no part in supporting anyone’s habit. I just can’t.

Wow I can’t believe this. Be happy you have your best. friend back. A simple thank you would do. Thank you to the woman that helped and everyone who donated

Not one time did i read that he had a drug problem no parking tickets yes so who is she to assume that he had a drug problem and she better be able to account for the money that she spent and by rights it was donated to him not her to say what she is gonna do with the money

      • Charla

Other articles say he was arrested for weed and the money was donated for him to get his dog out, nothing more. After the $400 was reached, everything should be returned to the donors. He’s not owed anything.

Would a normal, rational, not addicted person act like this? Probably not…. If someone did something like that for me I would be astounded, and forever grateful, not go after her for more money. The woman didn’t do it to gain money for herself, so wtf. It was donated to get the DOG back, nothing more. That happened.

Wow She helps reunite you with your BEST FRIEND (I’m guessing maybe ONLY friend) and you verbally threaten her instead of saying ‘THANK YOU!’ That would have sufficed. You taught me to NOT donate to someone I “feel for” because for all I know, it’ll come back to bite me in the ass, try to be nice and THIS guy comes along and ruins an act of kindness. SHAME ON YOU (Somebody steal that dog, give it to a selfLESS owner)

      • Amy

congrats you just made yourself sound as horrible as this man

Good for her, she is REFUNDING ALL THE MONEY BACK TO THE PEOPLE!! Selfish guy, go away dude, you suck the fun out of life and the love out of small children! BAD!! BAD MAN!! Go lay down

    • Kayla

I think it’s wrong that she reimbursed herself for the money she spent out of the kindness of her heart. After they got up the $400 to get the dog out, she should have sent the rest of the money back to the people that sent it. That was just wrong of her, just like it was wrong of the guy to try and sue her for money that wasn’t his in the first place.

I seriously disagree with the first part. Vet bills are not cheap. She has a family to take care of also.

        • Kayla

The money was not for her! She wasn’t taking up donations to reimburse herself but to help this man and his dog. She didn’t have to pay the vet bills but decided to. Doesn’t mean she should be paid back for it.

          • Sara

I disagree as well. I think it’s was normal to get reimbursed. Why did they ask for donations if she was going to give it all herself? Makes no sense to me. If I was one of the donators, I wouldn’t mind.

          • jessica

Actually she stated that the donations would go to reimburse herself and people donated knowing that. Furthermore almost every single person who donated is behind Maria 100% in her decision to refund the excess money. She had said if anyone wants the cash to go directly to Dave then the money will be refunded and they are free to give the cash to him. You obviously haven’t been following the story very closely. She is protecting herself from an unstable and ungreatful greedy greedy man. When you are involved in fundraising it is your responsibility to make sure the fixated money is used responsibly and is in line with the donors wishes therefore refunding the money is the smartest thing she could have done.

    • Ally

He should be grateful to her NOT sueing her!!! She got his dog back while he was not responsible enough. Good for her to return the money!

    • Jenn

Wait….weed is considered a “drug problem” now?

I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

    • pattie

Man, he sounds like a selfish, greedy, lowlife loser. Geez…people like him will make people think twice before they stick their neck out or go out of their way to help someone else. Shame on him!!! Disgusting guy.
