High school heart: Homecoming king nominees’ gracious secret pact

High school can be hell and we certainly post our fair share of the rampant bullying epidemic that haunts the hallways of our learning institutions. This time around, however, I’m showing that high school kids can have serious heart as represented by three would-be homecoming kings from Tennessee.

Zeke Grissom, Jesse Cooper and Drew Gibbs were the official nominees for Unionville Community High School’s homecoming celebration on Friday. These three young men decided among themselves that whomever was elected would hand over the crown to junior Scotty Maloney, who was born with Williams Syndrome, a neurological disorder that inhibits learning and speech.

Here’s the report from Nashville’s WKRN:

Jesse Cooper, who won the popular vote, said, “I’ve been blessed with so many things. I just wanted Scotty to experience something great in his high school days.” When Cooper’s name was announced, the principal of the school stepped in and let the crowd know what the young men had decided. The gathered assembly of fellow classmates and teachers stood and gave Scotty a 30-second standing ovation once he was named king.

Scotty’s teacher, Liz Hestle Gassaway, expressed her feelings for the new BMOC.

“I think I saw Scotty shed a few tears. I know Jesse was pretty emotional. We were all emotional out there on the court… Scotty is fabulous. He is a superstar. He knows everybody. There’s not one person that Scotty does not know. To know him and meet him is to love him.”

She was also extremely proud of the three young men who made such a special memory for Scotty, ‘We want people to have more empathy towards people, not be scared of people with disabilities. We want them to embrace them, more like the boys did.”

Since the surprise Scotty still sports the same smile and endearing goodwill everyday at school. Oh yeah, he also proudly displays his king’s medal too.

wow, good job to their parents for raising them with love and respect!

Maybe it’s because I grew up with a severely disabled brother and many of my friends as a child were also disabled but I do not find stories like this inspirational. They are doing this purely out of pitty and not because they think he should be given the title. People need to stop pittying the disabled and start treating them how they want to be- as normal as possible.

You have no idea what their motivation was.

      • Kelly

Wow. I grew up with a severely disabled sister, and yes, people can be very cruel. But in my experience there have also been some genuinly good people who wanted to give her special experiences. You don’t know these boys so shame on you for automatically assuming that their intentions were selfish.

they didnt do it out of pity, they did it so the boy could feel special, this happen at homecoming this year were i live the whole school got together and voted the girl queen because she wanted to participate and the students were nice enough to make her feel special, even though the other girls wanted the crown too..they were willing to give up something they really wanted to make someone else feel good..that’s amazing..this is how people should be..

shame on you :( Do you not think people want to do something from their heart?? As someone that knows them, well. It was done with LOVE&KINDNESS. !! Jesse don’t pitty. He has heart. Ask anyone. This act was what they wanted to do , to make another human being day!! Thats just Jesse!!! They never knew it would turn into a big deal. So don’t hate. There are people left with Big HEARTS!!!

Wow, I’m saying this as a mother of a special needs daughter. Not everyone does things out of pity! Maybe they thought he deserves the title more than they do, but knew people would not vote for him!
I find people like you sick! I guess you think special needs children don’t deserves to have anything memorable happen to them!

      • Sarah

My high school elected a girl with Down’s to be our Senior Prom Queen. No one did it out of pity but because we all truly liked her and thought she deserved it. I agree with Kelly… don’t automatically assume the worst in people!
