There she is, Miss America
There she is, your ideal
With so many beauties she took the town by storm
With her all-American face and form…

Introducing your 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan! The 23-year-old former Miss New York beat out 52 other beautiful ladies from around the nation to take home the top honors and a $50,000 scholarship (which is almost a full year at most private universities!) in last night’s competition held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas last night.

Hagan, who now lives in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn after relocating to New York City from Alabama in 2008, performed a tap dance routine for the talent portion of the competition and answered this question about gun control (asked by Good Morning America‘s Sam Champion) in the interview portion:

Sam Champion: In the wake of the Newtown tragedy there has been a lot of talk about gun control. One solution being proposed is an armed guard in every school. Do you think that would make our schools safer?

Mallory Hagan: I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence. I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period.

For the swimsuit competition, Mallory Hagan wore a black bikini with gold embellishments:

In the preliminary competition, Hagan competed in the evening wear competition wearing a one-shouldered form-fitting full-length white gown with her blonde hair pulled back tightly:

As mentioned above, Mallory did a tap dance routine for her talent, and for her performance she wore some shiny black dance pants with matching midriff-exposing long-sleeve jacket in addition to lots of sass!

Mallory Hagan beat out first runner-up Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers and second runner-up Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton for the title, taking the reigns from 2012 Miss America Laura Kaeppeler. Her platform was stopping child sexual abuse.

Hagan is the first Miss New York to win the Miss America crown since Vanessa Williams in 1984. (Williams would lose her title 10 months later after a nude photo scandal.)

Congratulations to Mallory Hagan!

        Loved watching her yesterday

I love that while she is obviously in very good shape, she isn’t just a tiny little anorexic looking girl. You can tell she’s actually healthy, not just striving to be super thin. It’s a good message for women!

        • Geniya

she isnt thin yeah that is nice bbut she doesnt seem feminie . woman need some actual fat not a lot but some it just looks natural and beautiful she is more masculine

          • cd

I don’t think you have any idea what fit people actually look like. To say that she looks masculine is so utterly clueless and frankly disappointing. Stop criticizing the way women’s bodies look, and instead revel in what they can do.

            • Geniya

why do you care what i think. there is nothing wrong with having an opinion on how woman should look like. some people think woman should shave everything some people dont believe in shaving eveyone has their own idea on what beautiful is and she is not what i consider beautiful. Your basically bashing me for having an opiinion

              • cd

Why do I care? Because you are contributing in your own small way to the societal pressure put on women to look certain way, rather than celebrating them as human beings. Women can (and should) be strong, and it should be considered distasteful for them to look like they actually work out. The waif-like ideal perpetuated in media is, in the vast majority of cases, completely unachievable by the average woman, and is in many cases not even achievable by the celebrities themselves. Photoshopping plays a huge role in perpetuating these ridiculous ideals.

Am I bashing you for having an opinion I don’t agree with? No, I’m just disagreeing with you. There is a difference. If you don’t want to have someone disagree with you, don’t put your opinions online for all to see.

                • cd

                  *should NOT be considered distasteful…

                • Geniya

When did i say i don’t want people disagreeing with me and why are you telling me what to do. everyone has their own opinion on what beauty is. Well only stupid people let the ideals get them by Photoshop its matter of how a woman feels about herself without the influence of Photoshop or media. woman need to look healthy like they have a relationship with food but not an obsession I am woman and that is my belief i am sorry my opinion has offended you. You should spend your energy elsewhere

                • Geniya

isn’t there a protest you should be at
