Miss USA Olivia Culpo, a sophomore at Boston University, beat out 88 other pageant queens to become Miss Universe last night at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada. Twenty-year-old Olivia is the first Miss USA to win the Miss Universe pageant since 1997. Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon came in second and Miss Venezuela Irene Sofia Esser Quintero finished third.
After strutting her stuff in a blue and purple string bikini (sorry, all we have is the Olivia Culpo swimwear photo from the preliminaries above and the official bikini photo from the Miss USA pageant below) and a stunning red velvet evening gown with a plunging neckline, Olivia received the title of Miss Universe and the crown which was handed down from Leila Lopes of Angola who won last year.
Prior to the competition, Olivia spoke with the Boston Herald about how Miss Universe differs from Miss USA. “For Miss USA, I felt more pressure to be lean. Here, they’re bigger and taller. The look of Miss Universe is more voluptuous.”
As the winner of the crown, Olivia Culpo receives an undisclosed salary, a designer wardrobe, a limitless supply of beauty products, and a luxury apartment in New York City.
After the competition, Olivia took to Twitter and wrote, “What an honor! This night was a dream come true. Thank you everyone for your support tonight!! USA finally did it!”
Now that Culpo has gone on to become the Miss Universe, Miss Maryland Nana Meriwether will take her place as Miss USA after finishing first runner-up in the 2012 Miss USA pageant to Olivia Culpo.
