Count me in as one of the millions of fans of the hit show The Walking Dead. While I get pretty passionate about Officer Rick Grimes and the gang I do not take it as seriously as 26-year-old Jared Gurman from Williston Park, New York does. No where even close apparently.
Gurman, above mugshot, was arrested after he is said to have shot his girlfriend, Jessica Gelderman, in the back with a rifle, following an argument about the possibility of a real zombie apocalypse.
The couple, who have been dating over 3 years, went out Sunday evening and started a discussion about The Walking Dead and the possibilities of an actual zombie haunted world as depicted in the show. This back and forth got heated enough for Gelderman to decide to crash at her parent’s home instead of Gurman’s apartment. When she returned to smooth things over that’s when things broke bad.
The police stated that when she arrived, Gurman was waiting for her with gun in hand on a set of stairs. She tried to diffuse his anger by telling him it was time for the two of them to go to bed, but as she was making her way up the stairs she was shot. In an initial statement to police Gurman stated, “Jess walked into the room and I fired the gun once and hit her. She said, ‘Oh my God. What did you do?’ ” Nassau Det. Lt. Raymond Cote stated that a single round from a .22-caliber semiautomatic rifle pierced Gelderman’s lung and diaphragm, and shattered her ribs.
Gurman rushed Gelderman to a hospital where he was promptly arrested. Gurman was ordered to jail without bail and has since plead not guilty claiming that the rifle went off accidentally.
“I just know that he felt very adamant that there could be some type of military mishap that would result in some sort of virus or something being released that could cause terrible things to happen.”
As of late Tuesday, Gelderman was in stable condition at the hospital but the bullet was still lodged in her body.
