Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne brings grenade to airport

I absolutely adore me some Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips, but now when I hear “Do You Realize” (my pick for best pop song of the last decade) I’ll be thinking the following…

“Do you realize that you have brought a grenade to the airport Wayne!?!”

Apparently Coyne forgot about a gag gift, a hand grenade that wasn’t live, he had received that was in his baggage, and when TSA discovered he was in possession of said freaking hand grenade, they collectively freaking freaked out. Perhaps Coyne didn’t get the “soft bulletin” about explosives and air travel?

This all went down November 10th at the Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City. The TSA officials on hand shut down the terminal (always makes me nervous that it’s called a “terminal”) and then really didn’t know what to do about the situation they faced. Sources stated they were frantic because they had no “bomb guys” on duty.

This particular incident isn’t making me feel any safer about flying the friendly skies.

After TSA finally figured out the explosive device wasn’t live, following a bunch of cancelled flights etc., they let Coyne go. Wayne is as notoriously kind and nice as he is off-center and took to his Twitter account to apologize for the mess his forgetfulness caused:

Coyne was headed out to Los Angeles to check out a preview performance of the musical Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots based on The Flaming Lips’ 2002 masterpiece album of the same name.
