I was working at a music store when the Chris Gaines CD was released. A couple weeks before street date we received a very terse memo from the record label insisting that we file the CD in Pop/Rock under “Chris Gaines” and NOT in Country and NOT under Garth Brooks. It was out about a week and then we got another memo marked “URGENT!” that said to move all Chris Gaines CDs to Country and file them under Garth Brooks. That’s what I was going on. It can be argued (and should be argued!) that his lifespan was even shorter, or even that he never lived at all. But I believe he DID live and STILL lives on! Until I hear that Chris Gaines died in a Wal-Mart fire saving a pregnant Amish woman, I will keep a candle burning in the window for his return. In my other window is a candle burning to keep Garth in retirement.
