‘Modern Family’ cast demands more money: sues studio and misses first day of work

The entire adult cast of Modern Family (Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ed O’Neill, and Sofia Vergara) are taking a major stand against their studio 20th Century Fox over money issues.

Ed O’Neill, who was the only major star when the series got started, makes $100,000 and episode, and the others make $60,000. They reportedly want around $200,000 now. (TV star problems, most average people would be happy to make $60,000 a year, but then again, the average person doesn’t have millions of people watching them, which in turn, funnels millions of dollars in revenue to the studios and networks.)

Everyone (except O’Neill, who has a different contract) is already suing 20th Century to get out of their contracts (they say they violate California’s Seven-Year Rule,) and now they refused to show up for the first day of table reads for the new season to show they mean business.

A rep for ABC says: “We can confirm that today’s table read has been canceled. No other comment at this time.”

Modern Family’s a popular AND award winning show. Do you think they’ll cave?

UPDATE: The adult cast have struck a deal, and the lawsuit was dropped. Executive producer Christopher Lloyd told E!:

It’s not a surprise. It’s a distraction that has gone away. It’s not a particularly pleasant thing but a necessary hurdle when you’re on a long running show. It didn’t last that long and we’re ready to get back to the fun of our job, which is a really fun job.”

Now the kids want more money.

I agree that they deserve money for making a successful show but once it starts interfering with getting said show on the fall schedule, then I see them as douches.

      “moneys” issues?
      it’s either money or monies.

i used to like this show, but when they started to get greedy, i was turned off. it’s ridiculous how much money they already made and they’re demanding more now. unreal.

        yep, typo, thanks!

Being too greedy has always gotten me in trouble. Take what you have gotten and be happy. End of Story

I think I’m on the complete other side of the fence on this one. With as many awards as the cast has one, including a Golden Globe and several Emmy awards, I think they have earned a raise. How much money do you think this show is making for the studio?

considering that the shows on TV right now are sub par, it’s no surprise they have been nominated and have won awards. put this show up against classics like friends, seinfeld or even cheers, and modern family isn’t that special.
it just makes me sick how much tv starts and movie stars and professional athletes make. and how they act when they want even more. yes, they’re talented. yes, they’re bringing in a lot of money. but at a certain point, you should just be thankful you have a job, have a paycheck and have a pretty nice life and get over yourself.

I agree with you! There are many people out there, myself included who cannot get hired to save their lives. And who would be more than happy with $60 grand an episode. I used to really like the show and still kind of do, but I don’t think I will try and watch it if they are going to be so greedy. There are starving kids all over the world, parents who cannot pay for the things their children need like diapers and clothes, or even a house. Famous people…… jeeze.

I don’t care who asks for what, and who gets what.. this show makes my WEEK.. it MUST GO ON!!!!

their pay should be somewhat proportional to what they make the network. Its a cute show, but I agree, its nothing special. but at the end of the day its not really about quality its quantity. If they are getting fox the viewers and advertising $$ then they deserve to be compensated accordingly. That should also include the younger cast.

This goes for any business in my mind. If a corporation is doing really well, then pay the staff accordingly not just CEO’s.
