K. Michelle is one of the stars of VH1’s breakout hit Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. Before she was dropping mix tapes and catching the attention of R. Kelly the lovely and talented woman was simply known as Kimberly Pate doing her thing in Tallahassee, FL at FAMU.
If you take a peek back at Kim’s bio one of her impressive accomplishments was being selected as Miss Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University in the spring semester of 2003. According to a recent post via Rattler Nation, Pate wasn’t able to serve in the position due to circumstances that forced her to take time off from school. I like my ladies seriously old-school so I took it back a few years to K. Michelle’s Freshman year as she served as part of the Royal Court.
The following is another great one of K. Michelle from back in the day. The photo was captioned this way, “Freshman attendant, Kimberly Pate, and escort, Jakari Griffith, dance the waltz. Kimberly’s warm smile is just a small indication of the very inner radiance which aided her in becoming Miss Freshman Attendant.”
Here is Kimberly talking about her days as a Rattler with Kareem the Dream:
And here’s how Kimberly got her position and what the duties entailed:
The position of attendants to Miss FAMU takes preparation, hard work and dedication. These 5 women had only 1 week to hand out fliers, put posters up, meet and greet students and do what it took to get the word around campus that they were the right person for the attendant position. With the help of family members and friends, Aronte Bennett, Tahira Phillips, Crystal Adams, Ashlei Mitchell and Kimberly Pate began their reign as the 2000-2001 FAMU Royal Court.
As official attendants for Florida A&M University, these women, along with Miss FAMU, attend meeting and recruitment fairs. They also attend all out of town football games in the hopes of recruiting high school seniors.
This was how K. Michelle was described as an attendant at FAMU:
