Anderson Cooper came out as gay: “I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud”

After years of the public’s speculation about his sexual orientation, Anderson Cooper publicly came out as gay in on thedailybeast.com. Anderson said that although he’s a very private person, he felt compelled to come out because there was a perception that he was ashamed, but that’s not true.

In a letter to journalist Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast, Anderson addressed the issue. He says that he hasn’t talked about his sexuality partly for private reasons, but also because “I’ve always believed that who a reporter votes for, what religion they are, who they love, should not be something they have to discuss publicly.”

Recently, however, I’ve begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle. It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something – something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.

I’ve also been reminded recently that while as a society we are moving toward greater inclusion and equality for all people, the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible. There continue to be far too many incidences of bullying of young people, as well as discrimination and violence against people of all ages, based on their sexual orientation, and I believe there is value in making clear where I stand.

The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.

In the past, people with high profiles who were gay had to completely hide who their were to risk losing their job, and public shame and ridicule. Thankfully, we now live in a time where that simply isn’t true anymore. Entertainment Weekly recently did a cover story on how casually gay celebrities are coming out now. When Ellen DeGeneres came out in the 90s, it literally destroyed her career for a while.

Even though the public is still very interested in who’s gay or not, it’s more of the same voyeuristic curiosity in who public figures are dating, than finding it to be scandalous. There are still people who hate and demonize gay people, but those numbers are creeping into the minority.

Good on him for coming out. It takes a lot of courage to come out. I wish him all the best for the future and hope small minded people don’t judge him. My best friend came out as a lesbian and had to deal with two faced people being nice to her in person and bitching behind her back. X

Lets book this under “Duh.” lol.

    • Interesting…

No surprise here..I wish him the best though. :)

      Yes, “duh”.
And I don’t hate gays, in todays society its a trend to be gay and anyone who thinks its wrong is accused of being judgemental or discriminating.
“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination.”
      -Leviticus 18:22

      • Really?

LOL Christians quoting Old Testament lawbooks to prove a point. You clearly do not understand your own religion or its relation to the Old Testament. Nice try, but go educate yourself.

Make sure you don’t wear mixed material clothes, work on Sunday, or eat shellfish! Because, you know, all that is in the Old Testament too… or are you one of those “choose your own adventure” types? (that is, choose which ones are easiest for me to be all self righteous about and ignore the ones that I don’t like!)

            • Forrest

Oh, ds, I don’t, I just live by the Book.
1 Peter 3:9 “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”
If a could I’d quote the whole Bible for y’all.

              • Really?

Like I said, you are clearly a Christian who does not realize that Jesus over-ruled the Old Testament law books. Like I said, go educate yourself more on your own religion, because you’re making a fool out of yourself and people who are Christians who actually know what they are talking about.

Okay, I’m 16 and became a Christian in October when I joined my local Southern Baptist church. To be honest i googled “Bible verses for people who mock Christians” since I haven’t really read the Bible yet and am still learning.
                  I apologize for my ignorance.

    • OhMyGeez

That’s stating the obvious. I don’t think anyone in the public eye should feel the need to come out to us. It’s their personal business and none of ours. Good on him for being happy but I’ll watch him regardless.

How is THIS news? I already thought he WAS gay. He spent much too much time worrying about the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Camille Grammer’s shrug. He’s also a close friend of Andy Cohen’s. Personally, I don’t care if he’s gay, straight or bi. Live and let live. I hope he’s happy now.
