Amber Portwood Regrets Choosing Prison Over Drug Treatment

Amber Portwood

Amber Portwood has recently begun serving her five-year prison sentence at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana. She had shockingly requested the sentence after opting out of her drug treatment program. Amber was required to complete the program as a result of a previous arrest.

During the time she was on her program, Amber missed a court ordered drug appointment. Later, she claimed that the doctors who performed her gall bladder surgery had put her on bed rest but the doctors denied it. Although the judge had been firm in wanting her probation terms met, he let it slide.

The Teen Mom‘s decision to fore go treatment and head to prison left fans wondering what she was thinking. How could anyone in their right mind want to go to jail? As it turns out, Amber is already regretting her drastic decision.

Amber’s brother, Shawn Portwood, recently told Reality Weekly, “She threw in the towel. She did it on purpose because she wanted to give up.” Shawn also says that she didn’t think the decision through before committing to it and assumed that going to prison would be similar to county jail.

Another source told OK! Magazine, “She knows she’s a target for the other inmates and she really is scared for her life. She’s been having panic attacks and is convinced she’s going to die before she gets out.”

Fortunately for Amber, she will likely be released on parole after just two-and-a-half years. She will also have the opportunity to cut another 30 days off of her sentence if she completes the on-site drug rehabilitation program. Though this is sure to be an intense experience for Amber, it may be what she needs to finally kick her drug habit and focus on being a good mommy to her 3-year-old daugher, Leah.

Her inability to think things through is a recurring theme in her life. I really hope she can get herself together in 2.5 years and make something good come of all this crap she’s put herself and everyone else thru.

This headline was the biggest “well, duh!” moment I’ve ever had

      • OhMyGeez

I thought the same thing. She needs to learn how to stop and think.

    • hello there!

So she is in prison not jail? The article titles always say Amber choosing jail but Rockville is a prison. I can’t believe that her lawyer or someone didn’t really explain the difference. The last 2 seasons in almost every scene she is in she is giving someone attitude or many occassions trying to instagate fighting so what does she expect when she goes prison, that everyone is going to be sweet? I hope she can take advantage of the programs and at least comes out clean with a GED.

Amber’s legal counsel did not have a chance to explain the difference between “gel” (Amber-speak) and the Big House because Amber, clearly showing her ability to think things through before making big life decisions, neglected to share with her lawyer that she had chosen to give up the rehab program and go through with the prison sentence. When she announced to the judge in court that she wanted the prison sentence instead, one of the most surprised persons in the court was her attorney! She hired the attorney to give her sound legal advice – and it don’t come cheap…yet obviously, when it came down to the wire, Amber knew far better than any sworn Member of the Bar Association! How’s that for using your brain and hard-earned Teen Mom $$$ wisely? Not exactly the sharpest eyeliner pencil in the makeup bag, that Amber!

Did we learn nothing from Butch!! Jail is not a place for rehab! I hope that girl gets some help she clearly has severe issues and they need to keep that baby away from her until she can get the help she needs especially for her anger. That last episode was crazy with hate and anger brought on by who knows what.

    • Of course!

You mean 5 years behind bars without getting to see your family or your child is worse than a couple of months of rehab? Say it ain’t so!

She regrets it because she found out convicts, unlike Gary, will punch her lights out and she isn’t the baddest thug on the block anymore. She is in with real hardcore criminals now and realizing she isn’t as bad as she thought she was. Oh well.

I think prison was inevitable for her.

      • helloisitme

Yeah probably. I don’t know how great the drug programs are in prison but hopefully she can take the initiative to move forward and not end up in prison again.

      That didn’t take long!

      she’s an idiot.

I have but one word for you, Amber: DUH.

    • Aww

I’m finally catching up on the second episode from this past week and I feel so sad and sorry for her. I literally almost started crying. The scene at the beginning was possibly the most real Teen Mom has been in a long time. It’s just so tragic. :(

feel sad for her poor little innocent DAUGHTER, not amber. amber is high all the time. she doesn’t care! she feels juuuuust fine while everyone else deals with the consequences of amber’s actions and bad decisions.

      Ugh, this girl….

While I wouldn’t say I hate Amber. I find it hard to have sympathy for her. She had chances to get clean her family and Garys family were bending over backwards to help with her problems cps were giving her support and she had chances to get her GED. She threw all that in their faces when all she had to do was a out patient rehab program and she would have been able to be in Leah’s life more. I hope for Leah’ s sake she gets clean and gets her education sorted but i don’t think she will.
