Amber Portwood asks to go back to prison instead of returning to drug court program

Teen Mom Amber Portwood

Very troubled Teen Mom star Amber Portwood shocked an Indiana courtroom earlier today when she asked to serve out her five-year prison sentence instead of being sent back to a drug rehabilitation program. She admitted to the judge that she hasn’t been able to stay clean, even while in rehab, and that she will always be a “bad girl.”

UPDATE – It is now being reported that the drug Amber Portwood is addicted to and can’t seem to quit is Suboxone. CLICK HERE to read more about Amber’s addiction and the drug Suboxone.

TMZ reports that “Amber’s lawyer stood by in shock as this unfolded, shaking his head the entire hearing.”

Amber went on to say she couldn’t stand the drug court program and wanted out as soon as possible.

She is reportedly headed to Madison County jail in Indiana where she will be staying until her sentencing in a few weeks.

We now have Amber’s latest mug shots here.

      She needs HELP, not prison!

      • Jason Bordeaux

Amber needs prison as that is for sure the help she needs. Amber for sure 1,000,000,000% is “Out Of Control” and assaults people instead of acting like a adult and TALKING! Totally Unacceptable and the place they put such people that act this way and ASSAULT People is PRISON.

    • Feeling sorry

I actually feel bad for her, she made a big mistake on season 1 by hitting gary. But she is still paying for it. We all make mistakes, who are we to say that one sin is worse than the other. That is only GODS say. Jesus said love thy neighbor as you love him. I really do feel bad for her, it sounds like she has given up totally. Pray for her.

      • Heather

I know that she did make a mistake by hitting Gary and is paying for it still…but she has admitted to being addicted to drugs since she was 13 years old. It wasn’t just for hitting Gary, she has a lot of issues that, hopefully, for her sake as well as her daughters sake will in the future be resolved and make her a stronger person.

      • Stefani

She isn’t paying for hitting Gary.. she is paying for her drug problem.

        • Jason Bordeaux

Well said! She is a serious doper will very serious anger and Assault problems. She needs a serious dose of reality. Some prison time will do her some good.

      • Anna

Did you hear Jesus say that? Or maybe know someone who heard that? Do you really have even a molecule of evidence to prove “Jesus” said that? I feel sorry for you. Living in fear that if you don’t abide by the rules in that book that you will burn in hell. By the way, I hope you aren’t braiding your hair, eating shell fish or wearing linen and wool together because straight to hell you will go!

And if you are going to use the bible to support your arguments then maybe you should quote this one once in awhile: “If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.” It is one of my faves.

@Hanna “Maybe she can finally get clean”? In jail? Not bloody likely, unfortunately.

@Sara She will probably go to county jail for a 5-month-term, not prison. Not a big distinction but just FYI

      • Starcasm Staff

It’s not 5-month-term, it’s 5 years. This post was initially published with the incorrect info, and you may still have that version cached. Our apologies.

Oh, WOW! That makes her decision even more insane! TY for clarifying, and I take back the jail comment…prison it is. *sigh*

    • Allison

Wow, that really shocks me about her… that’s some nerve she’s got. :o

      • Jason Bordeaux

        She needs PRISON!

@Feeling sorry “I actually feel bad for her, she made a big mistake on season 1 by hitting gary. But she is still paying for it.”

She is still paying for it, yes. However, she is also paying for the multitude of SUBSEQUENT mistakes she made. She would not be in this mess if she’d gotten herself together after the Gary incident. Unfortunately, she made a lot of bad decisions and ended up in this situation.

    • Brittany

Idiot!! She will regret saying that. Idiot isn’t even a strong enough word.

    • coco

That’s scary that Amber prefers prison over drug rehab. Something is clearly wrong with her. Part of me hopes she gets her wish because maybe stern punishment is what she needs. However, my mind always goes back to Leah. Where is she in all of this? I know, or guess, Gary has custody but who is mothering Leah? Gary’s mom has always been helpful and Leah needs a good role model in her life. Amber seems to have had a bad relationship with her own mother and we see how she has turned out.

    • WenchLikeMe

Does she even have a relationship with little Leah anymore? That poor child.

    • http://Starcasm Mrs. Noogent

My heart goes out to this young girl. I hope and pray she gets help. To all the Amber haters, don’t kick someone when they’re down.

      • WenchLikeMe

No need to figuratively kick her while she’s down… I think she is taking care of that all by herself! Frankly, I hope she gets help, but SHE doesn’t WANT help! I can’t respect someone who picks drugs over their child.

    • Kelly

Wow. I hope for Leah’s sake they don’t automatically give her the entire sentence. Hopefully this will wake her up and inspire her to make better decisions. I wish her all the best.

    • hope

Well mtv is no longer filming her so no more big fat pay checks she’s had all this time to get a ged and still nada! So money for drugs or anything I’m sure she’s blown thru all the money she has earned so maybe this is the reality check she needs

    • Paige

This is just sad. She’d rather go to jail for 5 YEARS, instead of focusing on getting clean and getting out to spend time with her daughter. SMH

    • Kait

I think that she realizes that she wont stay clean, even with a drug program. In prison, maybe she’ll have a chance. Unfortunately, this comes at the high price of losing a relationship with her daughter.

      • Jason Bordeaux

Not a Chance to stay clean , UNLESS she truly wants to stay clean. FYI: it is easier to get drugs in “prison” then on the street. I work for a state prison system. Trust me when I say “Drugs are everywhere” in prison.

    • KH

Wow! At least she knows rehab won’t help her. Amber made a really tough decision. Poor little Leah! Not having your mommy around for five years is going to be tough on her, especially since she is only three right now. I really do hope and pray that Amber can one day get clean and stay sober for her beautiful baby girl!

    • Shianne Erin

You know, I think going to prison might be the best thing for her at this point. I know prisons offer mental help, which she clearly needs, and hopefully she wouldn’t have access to any drugs in there either.

Either way, I hope she gets the help she needs. She obviously needs it.

      • lili

Drugs are actually as easy to get in prison than out on the streets

      • Jason Bordeaux

It is VERY EASY to obtain drugs in “prison.” Easier then the street.

    • Natalie

She clearly has a deep addiction. She wants to go to prison because she knows she will be able to continue to use while there. I really hope that one day she is able to turn her life around and be a good mommy for Leah.

      • Jason Bordeaux

Amber is a willing “doper.” Leah will never have a chance with a doper mother that would rather go to prison “prison easy place to get and use drugs” then go to rehab and get clean for her little girl. Amber is a waste of skin!

    • Mango

That’s just messed up. How long could a drug program even take? 6 months at the most?
It’s sad that she obviously has no one in her life that cares about her.

      • Caroline

Drug court usually takes 1-2 years. It starts out very structured and strict and as you progress you slowly get more freedoms, less frequent drug screens. The first 6 months would be hardest but she still would be screened for at least 1 year, and expect to keep a job or go to school the whole time.

If Janelle completed 1 year of drug court(our similar program that required frequent drug testing , rehab and counseling) you would think Amber could.

        • Jason Bordeaux

NOT! and Ja-SKANK-nell is back on drugs. Did you miss that news??? lol

      • Jason Bordeaux

Who gives a crude who loves or likes her. She is a “adult” now with a child. She needs to “buck up” and be a good parent and NOT a worthless Doper that she IS!!! She is a horrible example for Leah. But I will say Amber would make a “Wonderful Poster for Birth Control.”

    • Aww…

No matter what I think about her, this is sad. I’m glad that she will have to stay clean and hope this helps her, but poor Leah.

      • Jason Bordeaux

She will get and do more drugs in prison then ANYWHERE. Prisons are slap full of drugs. She is a worthless DOPER/LOSER and deserves every single day of 5 years in prison. The child “Leah” should be taken away from her, as she is NOT a good role-model by ANY MEANS! Her actions prove she cares more about her Drugs and her on sorry self then that poor child. “Leah”

    • Alyssa

Sometimes people need a good jail/prison stay to get their life together. Somebody very close to me just got out of prison after 2 1/2 years and it did wonders for him. They offer all kinds of programs in prison so hopefully she can finally get the help she needs. I still can’t believe she would willingly put herself away for 5 years!! That’s a helluva long time! I feel bad for her daughter for having to go through all this :(

    • Mom of 4

      My heart breaks for Leah…

      • Jason Bordeaux

No Doubt. As that Amber is a LOSER of a parent. Poor Kid. DFACS needs to remove Leah with the quickness…

    • Taylor

Good for her a structured enviorment is what she needs and she knows it. My boyfriend is a recovering heroin addict and he tried everything and what got him clean was jail. He had to detox and was in long enough that he was able to get clean. Don’t bash her she wants to get clean and feels this is the only way more power to her.

    • amanda

My heart just breaks for leah, but i really think she is better off. Amber is toxic. She is negative and always yelling and mad, and has a drug problem. Its sad to say, but i think leah is better off with Gary and his family. I mean, its motherly instinct to want to protect your baby, and be there for her. She obviously isnt thinking about leah through all of this.

Gary’s comment about drug program being bullys is kinds dumb, considering Amber herself admits she cant stay clean. Does he expect them to go easy on her, when she is failing drug tests all the time.

I pray Amber can get better, and work on her emotional issues, and realllly step up and be the mother that sweet little leah deserves.

    • Jayla

I’m willing to bet all of you judging her have never had a drug problem, nor have any idea what its like to feel so horrible that you literally give up on life. She doesn’t choose drugs over her child, she has an addiction ffs nobody chooses that. Her guilt over being out of Leah’s life is what’s drivIng her to just give up altogether, she probs thinks Leah’s best off without her, which of course isn’t true but this is how ppl think when they’re at the pits of dispare. The saddest part is the money she made off teen mom likely supported this drug habit getting out of control and she wud have been better off if she’d never been on the show in the first place. I hope she finds peace with herself and is able to reconnect to her daughter as a parent. Meanwhile Gary is doing a great job and I am so happy to see what a good father he has become

      • Stefani

I have a best friend who is a recovering heroin addict and hasn’t done it in a very long time. So I know how hard it is.. but I also know it’s completely possible if recovering is important enough to you. She definitely has more issues than just a drug problem though. There is some sort of serious mental problem this girl needs to get taken care of.. you can tell just by how unhappy she constantly is and the screaming and everything else.

One thing I will say is that to a point, being addicted is a choice. You chose to start doing drugs which everyone KNOWS is addictive. Drug problems are so common. Everyone knows what drugs can do to you. She should have never started. If she started after Leah that is even worse.

      • Jason Bordeaux

I had a SEVERE drug problem, I used for 18 years “needle in arm 3 to 4 times a day. You can only get clean if you want to get “clean.” I chose to use all those years. NO ONE Ever put a gun to my head to use drugs. When I was tired of it all/drugs. Then and ONLY then I sought help. I have been drug free 100% for over 8 years now. As for Amber, She is a worthless parent and what she is doing around that child on camera and off camera is CHILD ABUSE! Amber is a waste of skin with a very violent temper. She will attack anyone in front of her child when things aren’t going her way. Not to even mention her foul mouth. Poor Leah, DCS “Department of Children Services” needs to take that child away are give her to Gary but only if Gary is a fit parent. Which on Tv seems to be. But as we all know Tv is BS 99% of the time. So they need to look into that entire family hard. She is a waste of skin to Leah until she wants to be clean and GETS CLEAN for GOOD!

    • Gwyn

I love amber, this makes me proud of her. The system has screwed her over completely. On the plus side, she could write an amazing book while in there, she’s had a very interesting life. Hopefully with good behavior she’ll be out sooner. Rather this than the ten years that she might get if she screws up again.

      • amanda

The system didnt screw her over, she did that to herself. She didnt have to go to jail, she chose it. If she would have stayed off drugs, she could be building a life for herself and leah, and being a good mother to her.

      • Jason Bordeaux

Yeah I guess you may be right as she IS a WONDERFUL DOPER. But a worthless and horrible parent. She should be the poster child for birth control. Interesting life…. WHAT A BAD JOKE! By that comment you posted here, I can see your a “kid” vouching for a worthless kid “Amber.” lol Please Get a GRIP on some REALITY.

    • FR

      Sad.

Anyone else notice that Amber’s mom also seemed to be on drugs/pills or drunk on alcohol a few times on Teen Mom? She was slurring her words and looked really faded.

Under the circumstances, it didn’t seem like Amber had much support in getting clean. She was refused entry to the halfway house because of concerns about publicity related to Teen Mom and has had a series of obstacles including recent, painful surgery. Going to prison in itself doesn’t really help her underlying addiction; it doesn’t help prepare her to be a productive member of society; and the estrangement is damaging to her relationship with her daughter. I’m not making excuses for her, but I do wish that she had been put in an environment more conducive to success.

      • helloisitme

oh for sure, it’s evident that quite a few of these kids came from awful environments that just lead to their major issues. That said, there has to be a point in time that one realizes they are adults and can no longer use their upbringing as an excuse to never advance and mature.

    • Manda

getting thrown into the spotlight like that does not help!! coz look at all the critism she gets 16 and pregnant was a show to show ppl how teen parenting can really b and how hard it is!!! i really feel sorry for amber! i think she has! tried really hard to be the best she can its not easy at all she needs support not to be put down every 2 seconds the best thing for her is to stay off tv get help and sort her life out for her daughters sake yeah shes made some mistakes but lets face it nobodys perfect!! and we all make them! i bet if she wasnt on teen mom she would be totally normal and different and no 1 would even notice her silly mistakes thats the only reason shes getting judged and u dont see every thing about her on tv and alot of shit u hear isnt true anyway dont giv up amber prove every one wrong coz u soo can!!!!!

    • Angelika

      Another teen mom loser.

    • helloisitme

Wow. Well at least she is being honest, and maybe jail will be the one thing that helps her get sober. I wish her luck.

      • Jason Bordeaux

Jail equals plenty of drugs and no drug testing. Amber is a worthless human with a sweet child she surly doesn’t deserve. She only cares for her self and her wants: DRUGS! What a loser of a parent, and a very violent parent at that. I hope she does every single day of the 5 years as it is what she deserves.

        • helloisitme

To be fair I have very little idea of what jail is like. I’ve watched some documentaries, but the whole thing is still an enigma. Can you really get a lot of drugs in there? I’ve always figured that a little bit can sneak in and be bartered or bought, but I thought that in this day and age there wouldn’t be enough of an underground business to truly maintain anyones serious addictions.

I don’t really know, but I’m completely fascinated with your comment in regards to jail. Can you elaborate?
