It appears that every cloud does have a silver lining, even the iCloud! Katy McCaffrey had her iPhone stolen in April while aboard the Disney Wonder cruise ship and assumed she would never see it again. Then, last month, photos began to show up on her iCloud stream thanks to an Apple feature called “Photostream” that automatically stores and syncs your personal documents – including all of your pictures!
The photos appeared to be taken by a Disney Wonder employee she calls “Nelson” and feature him partying, watching the sunset, and posing with other Disney Wonder employees. There were even a number of pictures of a woman (who is apparently pregnant) Katy assumes to be Nelson’s girlfriend.
Katy took 20 of the photos and created an album on Facebook which she titled “Stolen iPhone Adventures” that includes 20 publicly viewable images with Katy brief, but clearly bitter, commentary. Earlier today the album went viral after an initial article on NYMag.com brought attention to it. At the time of this article the album has been shared 8,127 times!
But humiliating “Nelson” isn’t the only compensation coming Katy’s way because a Disney spokesman revealed to USA Today that the iPhone had been recovered and the employee in question had been placed on “administrative leave.” From USA Today:
A Disney spokesperson said the line became aware of the Facebook photos and the alleged theft yesterday, and said the iPhone had been recovered. It is currently on the Wonder, and the line intends to return it to the owner when the ship’s current cruise ends.
The spokesperson said that while situation is being investigated, the crew member, who is still on the Wonder, is on administrative leave and has been restricted from guest areas.
As the New York Magazine article says, it is possible the alleged thief bought the phone from someone else, or that there is some other explanation as to why he had the phone in his possession.
Either way, Disney said it takes this matter “very seriously.”
“We have a zero tolerance policy for this type of behavior,” the spokesperson added. “We are taking aggressive action.”
What are the odds Katy gets a free cruise out of this? And I’m thinking maybe even an Apple Photostream commercial!
Just in case the Facebook album gets deleted or made private, here are all 20 photos in order with Katy McCaffrey’s captions for your enjoyment:
