RHONJ: What’s up with Lauren Manzo’s liquid egg whites only diet? Is it healthy?

On Real Housewives of New Jersey star Caroline Manzo’s daughter Lauren Manzo is on what sounds like a freaky diet. A few episodes ago we see Caroline and Lauren visit Dr. Perricone, who tells Lauren that all she can eat is liquid egg whites mixed with either berries or chocolate powder. What to the whaaaaa?

Is this supposed to be healthy?

It turns out that this diet, developed by Dr. Perricone, is a little more involved that just a serving of raw egg whites every day with a little flavor. Not much more, but more than what was presented on the show.

It’s called The Metabolic Diet Plan, it’s based around Dr. Perricone’s “Metabolic Formula dietary supplement” and this is what you do:

The Metabolic Diet Plan

Breakfast

Puree 1/3 cup of blueberries, raspberries or mixed berries of your choice in a blender or mix 1 teaspoon of non-Dutched processed cocoa with stevia and a little hot water. Blend thoroughly until smooth.
Add 1 teaspoon of organic virgin coconut oil to either the berries or the cocoa and blend until smooth.
Add 6-8 ounces of liquid egg white and stir. Do not blend, as this will make the drink too foamy.
Take one packet of the Metabolic Formula dietary supplement

Lunch

Puree 1/3 cup of blueberries, raspberries or mixed berries of your choice in a blender or mix 1 teaspoon of non-Dutched processed cocoa with stevia and a little hot water. Blend thoroughly until smooth.
Add 1 teaspoon of organic virgin coconut oil to either the berries or the cocoa and blend until smooth.
Add 6-8 ounces of liquid egg white and stir. Do not blend, as this will make the drink too foamy.
Take one packet of the Metabolic Formula dietary supplement.

Dinner

Prepare and eat the following:
Six ounces of grilled salmon
Two (2) ounces of cooked lentils
Watercress salad dressed with olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar
One (1) cup of steamed broccoli
Take one packet of the Metabolic Formula dietary supplement.

*Drink eight 8-ounces of fresh spring water throughout the day.

Snack

Allow yourself 3-4 ounce serving of the meal drink as a snack if you become hungry or feel low on energy.

From what was presented on the show, the diet didn’t seem to be sustainable at all, but the full diet, while a bit unappetizing and fulfilling at least allows for one meal of “real food.” Lauren calls it an “anorexic diet” but if this is the plan she’s following, that label doesn’t sound accurate.

Even if it isn’t exactly “anorexic,” it’s still probably makes you feel like you’re starving sometimes. Needless to say this diet turns Lauren into a Miss Grumpypants Esq. on camera (Note to self: If you ever try a crash diet, do so when your reality show in on hiatus.) She constantly complains about how her brothers don’t have to lose weight, and how no one cares if they gain weight and at one point in her delirious state, demands to be rich. It’s a little annoying, but understandable under the circumstances.

We’re not sure who kind of results Lauren achieved, but she’s still hoping to lose some pounds. Yesterday she tweeted “Lol I wanna look like a lollipop- i still do.”

Take it slow Lauren! Real weight loss is slow and steady, and relies on lifestyle changes, not a quick fix.

I’m getting tired of listening to this girl complain about her weight and how she’s not as good as her brothers. Listen missy … try having two younger, much better looking sisters, a mother who calls you “the smart one” and see how you feel about yourself. Get over it Lauren. At least you have a boyfriend .. and if he prefers tall, thin, athletic type women, you should tell him you prefer buff, athletic well endowed men and see how he reacts to that.

You should just eat healthier, smaller portions, get some exercise and you should be able to get down to a more “comfortable” size.

And one more thing … being skinny doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be rich. If you want to be rich you need to earn it the hard way .. ask your Dad .. he seems to understand that work ethic.

beauty fades but dumb is forever. value your intelligence!!

    • Blahblahblah

Extreme diets are just idiotic. They teach you nothing, you don’t change any of your previous habits and for those reasons, any weight loss you may enjoy, is probably short lived.

i would never try that!! can you say eww?? the way i see it is i only got one life to live and if there is great tasting food out there im not limiting myself with a diet!!! as long as i dont have health problems i see no need in a diet. but thats just me…

sry to tell you hunny but maybe if you didnt get pregnant in the first place you would be skinny. pregnancy kinda ruins your body (unless your lucky) which is why you should worry about being the best mom you can be not being skinny.

i bet she does have a bad temper, tends to happen when you go on a crash diet

Lauren Manzo doesn’t have any kids.

I think she meant she would be “rich” when she gets skinny because she works in the beauty industry and has the idea that she will make more money if she’s skinny. I can tell that some of the conversation about her weight is forced on this season. The Manzos just need to cash in their 15 minutes… They have no story right now other than hating Teresa, and Lauren’s weight. The lawsuit against them is obviously not going to be featured on the show.

Here’s the thing – Lauren is a beautiful girl. Yes, she’s a little heavy but she still has an adorable face. I agree with another poster that she should just try to control her eating, workout daily, and be comfortable with who she is. Once this diet is over and she goes back to eating “normally”, she’s going to be right back where she started.

I wish weight was my only concern! I’d happily be her size if I was rolling in dough like they seemingly are. Be thankful for what you have girlie!

This diet isn’t going to teach her to have a healthy lifestyle. Unless she plans on staying on this diet the rest of her life it will only be a fix for a small time. Once she goes off of it she will gain it back because she isn’t teaching herself how to eat properly.
Her getting mad at her brothers over absolutely nothing isn’t going to help her lose weight and eat better.

Its called portion control and getting off your a**, clearly she doesn’t have a health issue like a thyroid problem etc, its genetic get used to it. Look at her dad he was huge and still made money. I’m skinny as a toothpick its my genes and I’m not rich.

hells to the no! I lost 20 pounds several years ago by slowly eating better and exercising more. It took over a year for it to happen, but I’ve never gained it back, and I feel happy and like I can eat what I want. I genuinely just don’t want junk most of the time. Its so much better to do it that way, bc while it may not get you down to your goal weight right a way, you won’t spend years upon years of struggling with your weight.

I always thought Lauren was extremely beautiful just as she was. I really never saw her as “fat.” Sure she wasn’t a size 2, but in my book, size 2 is too skinny, unless one is truly meant to be very thin. And that really is a small part of the population.

Lauren has gorgeous hair, face, and her dimples are adorable. I hope she realizes that she is beautiful, even if not in a size 2! Or a lollypop. Why would anyone want to look like a lollypop anyway?

      • http://none Duh

True! We have to learn to love ourselves for who we ARE and not who we want to BE!!

    • Emme

Diets are useless. The metabolic schlock is just calorie restriction. It’s extreme limitation to only a couple of foods cannot be maintained and thus anyone on it will lose weight fast, then want to eventually eat like a normal human with lots of variety and regain weight because they “fail” the diet. What a giant setup to make people feel like failures.

Food is nutritious and delicious. Eat varieties of foods, especially fruit and vegetables of all colors (this provides a plethora of nutrients and vitamins increasing health, energy, decreasing cravings, and prolonging life!).

Track what you eat, not just for calories, fat, carbs, but for nutrients. When you start tracking your daily supply of b vitamins, calcium, d, a, e, potassium, sodium, etc. and making those numbers work, you will be eating more, for fewer calories and feeling full and energized. Try it for 2 weeks and feel the difference, try sparkpeople.com, livestrong.com, or other FREE oNline trackers and drop the fads. Your health isn’t a fad and shouldnt be making someone else rich!
