Network Greenlights New Installment in the “Teen Mom” Franchise: “Teen Mom 3”

MTV’s hit docu-series “16 and Pregnant” will return on Tuesday, March 27 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, with 12 episodes featuring new girls, new stories, and new struggles. The series continues to give viewers an authentic, honest, and intimate look inside the lives of teens as they face unexpected pregnancies and become parents at a young age. “16 and Pregnant” kicks off the season with two back-to-back episodes. Additionally, the network greenlit “Teen Mom 3,” a new series that will document the challenges of four new teens who are struggling to navigate parenthood. Details on “Teen Mom 3” will be announced at a later time.

This season on “16 & Pregnant,” viewers will watch these young moms face the dramatic ups and downs of being a teen parent. In one story, a pregnant teen will determine if adoption is the right choice for her, because she fears her boyfriend will continue to be unreliable. Another young woman will cope with her decision to keep her baby while her sister deals with the fact that she chose not to continue her pregnancy. Viewers will also meet a girl whose dream of going to college is suddenly halted after she becomes a teen mom, and another young woman who fights to raise her baby while dealing with a drug addicted parent and another young girl struggles with her mother’s disapproval of her relationship with her baby’s father. Each girl’s journey is unique, but they’re all dealing with the dramatic challenges that make being a teen mom so difficult. Through the tears, joys, and fears, they’re all doing their best to make their lives and that of their children the best possible.

According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, more than 700,000 teenage girls in the U.S. become pregnant each year and one out of every ten children in the U.S. is born to a teenage mother. The vast majority of these pregnancies are unintended. “16 and Pregnant” has been cited by experts as having an impact on the recent decline of teen birth rate, and a study in 2010 by the National Campaign found that 82% of teens who have watched the series think the show helps teens better understand the challenges of teen pregnancy and parenthood and how to avoid it. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) recently announced that the U.S. teen birth rate declined 9 percent in 2010 and is now at the lowest level ever reported. Experts from the National Campaign cite the “Teen Mom” franchise as one of the key factors contributing to this steep decline.

More information about sexual health issues affecting young people, including unintended pregnancy, is available at http://www.itsyoursexlife.com/, a public information resource developed by MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy is working with the show to provide additional information.

Since its launch in 2009, “16 and Pregnant” has captivated millions of viewers with its honest depiction of the lives of pregnant teens. The most recent season, Season 3, averaged 2 million viewers per episode, a +17% increase from the first season. In 2011, “16 and Pregnant” ranked #1 in its time period among P12-34 and W12-34 across all of cable. Season 2 delivered nearly 27 million streams and averaged 349K weekly unique visitors, dominating shows within their time period. Additionally, season 3 of “16 and Pregnant” delivered more than 32 million streams, +15% more than the prior cycle of the series. Averaging 330K visitors to the show each week, it consistently performs as one of MTV.com’s highest trafficked show season after season.

This season of “16 and Pregnant” will also air internationally on MTV channels around the world starting in Summer 2012.

Finally a new batch of girls! Hopefully it’s not fully fake like TM & TM2 are now.

    • tab

this show needs to go away.

      • Patri

Why would you want this show to go away? Every since this show teen pregnancy has went down.

        • Andrea

Teen pregnancy did not go down. Their was a pregnancy pack in Tenn.

          • Katie

Just because there was 1 pregnancy pact, doesn’t mean anything. Nationally teen pregnancy rates have dropped. Perhaps you should educate yourself before commenting next time :)

        • tab

          has went down?
is that you, leah? don’t you mean “has gone down”?
there’s no scientific proof that teen pregnancy has decreased because of this show. in fact, there have been quite a few reported cases of girls trying to get pregnant so they can be on the show.

          • oatmeal stout

Wow you have a pretty convincing case going for you… a couple anecdotal reports. You’ve totally convinced me, despite the “scientific proof” aka statistics.

            • KAITEY

Ok…where is YOUR proof that this show is the reason the teen pregnancy rate has gone down? Maybe the rates have gone down but MTV and the girls they glorify sure are full of themselves if they think they are the reasons for that. Tab is right. The show needs to go. They’ve already shown that teen pregnancy is hard. What more is there for them to say? Do they really need 12 more girls to say what they’ve been saying all along? No. They need ratings and these girls need that inflated ego to feel important.

          • krista

hahahaha.. to “tabs” comment… that was hilarious. teen pregnancy definitely has not gone down. If anything now everyones getting pregnant now.

      • Steph

I agree with you. I mean, I watch the TM and TM2 girls every so often, and I was really hoping the best for them… but enough is enough- this show does not do anything anymore, the effect is gone.

      • jill

it is going away after this season. they are only doing four seasons

        • Jess

Where did you hear that it is only going to be four season they are casting for season 5

    • Mikey

Its not about any of that anymore.. It’s all about the viewers and the money!

    • coco

I, for one do watch the show as well as TM and TM2. I can’t say it has a negative or positive impact on girls. Some girls see the show and think “Ok I don’t want to be like them” and take steps not to get pregnant. Others see them and think “Wow that looks fun” or “It isn’t hard” and still do have babies. So whether the show airs or not there still will be teen pregnancy. I teach at a local high school where pregnancy is the norm, have two teen nieces that live with me who vow they will never get pregnant until they are adults(I can only pray that’s true), as well as have a friend who is 32 and in the last 2 weeks became a GRANDMOTHER two times over courtesy of her 15 and 16 year old daughters so trust me it is NOT a show that makes the difference. It’s what happens at home. I can talk to my students until I am blue in the face (and sometimes I do) but the impact still needs to be felt at home and within that child. It is a choice for someone to become pregnant (with the exception of an assault). There are steps and precautions that can and should be taken but are not. So whether or not MTV airs a show or doesn’t isn’t going to change whether or not girls become pregnant. There has been spikes and lulls of teen pregnancy stats long before the show. It’s just the trend that happens over time.

      • Katie

I agree with you 100%! I’ve taken the negative side from the show and thought would I want to be in that position at a young age.
I’m 19 and have watched the show since first season. I’ve seen a friend go through being a teen mom and would not want to be in her situation. It’s all about choices( with what you said an exception) and for girls who want to get pregnant to be on the show, well that’s just plain stupid.
I don’t understand though the girls on the show. Their all upset when they tell their friends, they ask did you use protection? “well…no, nothing” hello!!! obviously that’s why you’re in that situation! I give credit to the parents that have gone through it and are actually great parents.
It’s all about the surroundings and the everyday environment which affect their lives.

    • Deena

These girls don’t seem to be as nasty as the previous season.

    • me

      Snore………………..

    • Hannah

      yaaay i cant wait :)

    • Kaylee

Makes me cry watching this. Iam a teen mom 2 and i no what there going through my oldest is about to be 3 and i really do hope ppl learn from this show. I no realize you want to have children when you are older so that way you can provied them with w.e they want/need. It sucks going into a store and having to use foodstamps to buy food. Or your child asking you for something but your too broke to get it. Teenage pregnancy needs to stop if i could change everything i would have my same kids just 10 years from now. Your child deserve everything thta you can give them and nothign less. I hope I pray actually that they do learn from this. Iam 19 going on 20 and i have amazing kids but the deserve more then i can give them. & its just not as satisfying where your parents have to provide for your child. I no how easy it is to get pregnant but i also no how easy it is not to. #Itmaylookeasybutyouneedtothinkagain <3

      • Posh

this comment made me so happy! you should be the spokesperson for mtv’s Preventing Teen Pregnancy, than those useless “teen moms”
i think if more little girls read this, more good will come out of it

    • sanoga

They always seem to find the most insecure, spineless girls. I’ve watched this show from the beginning and, with the exception of Catelynn Lowery, not ONCE has there been a strong, level-headed girl featured. Instead, we consistently see girls that yoyo date their loser boyfriends (the Maci / Chelsea story arcs), girls that pout and scream without effecting positive change in their lives (Amber / Markai), girls that sit back and mumble / cry while their boyfriends walk all over them (Lori / Nikkole / Lizzie), and girls that are just plain messed up (Jenelle / Leah / Kailyn / Ashley Salazar).

Once, JUST ONCE, I would like to see a STRONG, INDEPENDENT girl featured on this show. Not some girl that’s going to sit there, mumbling and crying because she’s living with the consequences of a bad decision. Until that day, I do believe that this show is a sad statement about the kind of girls our society is raising.

    • chee

so they’ve probably at least seen the first season of 16 and pregnant and teen mom but didn’t learn anything?

    • Traci

Its hard for me to believe that Teen Pregnancy has gone down. When I graduated in 2003 I hadn’t even heard about more than 1 case of teen moms at school. Years later my sister is a Senior in the same HS and there have been atleast 5-6 girls she knows that are/were,one of which was her friend who watched me go thru the trials of single motherhood and went and did it anyway, after me warning her to be safe and 2 pregnancy scares on her part. I know that sometimes things happen, but its awkward to watch most of these girls act giddy and excited about having a baby at that age. I had my daughter at 23 and was told i looked 15-16 and it made me soo uncomfortable to be pregnant at an appropriate age in a good situation at the time when i should have been excited like these girls. Even now I have women look at me like they think im not sure what im doing when my kid starting acting like well…a kid lol. Not the most fun, but im sure since most of these girls are portrayed a certain way it makes people think most teen moms are that way and if they think you are its soo lousy. I think its more frowned upon now then it was before because of this show. It has its positive and negatives but i can definately see its effect.

If teen pregnancy was going down..howd they manage 12 new girls for the show? Lol lets be real herr! No one is looking at this show as prevention anymore, these young girls see the teenmoms of past shows constantly in the spotlight, making good money, being “well known” (famous is a bit much lol) and think to themselves..i want that, sure it might be hard but ill get so much in return. These girls are in the most impressionable stage of their lives, and lets be honest, who wouldnt want to be famous and have lots of money? Its sad but true.

      • jane

@Ash- devon is actuallly my sister & i assure you she did not get pregnant to be on the show! My other sister & i actuallly sent in her application to be funny. & as of making lots of money these girls made next to nothing for doing this & how many girls who have been on 16 & pregnant in the past seasons have actuallly gone on to be on teen mom? You really dont see half of them anymore. So “famous” i think not! My sister is doing this show with good intentions to show its not easy! So before you put you ignorance out in the open possibly you should think about things a little more.

    • sherita

The fact that its been 4 seasons of teen pregnancies on MTV speaks volumes and not in a good way. I c girls r still getting pregnant on purpose to get on the show. Why wouldnt they? Look at Amber, this girl has no diploma or job or formal education and yet she made $280,000 in 2010, an utter disgrace. I bet u if a rival channel took this same idea but didnt pay the girls and saw the raw footage of what teen motherhood really is, I guarantee u there would be some stark changes.

    • lalala

Does anyone know who the last girl is that is holding the baby that is bawling over the sink and saying I feel the same way? And also who was the girl that was doing the jumping jack? I’m just wondering.
