Party Down cast and crew participate in marathon event at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin

The best short-run comedy series since Freaks and Geeks had a reunion marathon in Austin, Texas this weekend as cast and crew from the critically acclaimed Starz comedy Party Down gathered together to watch every single episode back to back with fans at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema!

Among those in attendance were (from left to right in the photo above) creators Dan Etheridge, John Enbom and Rob Thomas along with stars Martin Starr (Roman DeBeers), Megan Mullaly (Lydia Dunfree), Ryan Hansen (Kyle Bradway), Lizzy Caplan (Casey Klein), Adam Scott (Henry Pollard) and Ken Marino (Ron Donald). Noticeably absent from the festivities was Season One regular Jane Lynch, who was her usual rapid-fire sarcastic self as former hippie done-it-all Constance Carmell.

Speaking of Jane Lynch, it is theorized that her departure to be on Glee combined with Adam Scott leaving for Parks and Recreation (and I suppose pretty low Nielsen ratings) were major contributing factors to the show being canceled last year after only 20 episodes.

For those of you, like me, who fear they will never again hear Ron Donald talk about his failed Soup ‘R Crackers franchise or see Roman and Kyle continue their high road/low road (geek/stud) debates, rejoice because there is still hope! And this time it won’t be on the small screen!

That’s right… Party Down may soon be coming to a theater near you! Here’s what co-creator Rob Thomas said about the potential for a film when asked about the possibility of a Season 3 for the show:

Just in case you can’t watch Youtube videos at the catering business where you work, here’s what he said:

People are talking to us about doing a Party Down movie. We are pretty far down the deal-making process with that so we’re hopeful that there will be a Party Down movie. If it works out we could be shooting in television hiatus time next spring, so hopefully that deal will close and we’ll all read about it when it does.

When talking about the critical success of the show, Thomas gave a lot of credit to being on Starz and a whole lot of lowered expectations as far as ratings went. Those freedoms and lack of pressure allowed creators to pursue a different kind of show than what most television viewers are used to. From Rob Thomas:

More successful shows tend to be shows about people winning, and this is a show largely about people not winning.

(Maybe it’s just me but that seems like an impossibly clever dig referencing Charlie Sheen and Two and a Half Men! Am I reading too much into it?)

If you haven’t seen Party Down yet, then I recommend you watch it RIGHT NOW! You can catch it via Netflix online (like I did) or pick up the DVDs – either way, you won’t regret it!

Anyways, here are some more video clips from the event, which only served to remind me and my Willie Nelson loving self that Austin, Texas is better than where I’m at! (You can see more photos on the Alamo Drafthouse Facebook page HERE.)
